Obituary

MOUNT HOREB- Dolores (Holmes) Sutter, age 91, of Mount Horeb, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2023, at Ingleside in Mount Horeb. She was born on Jan. 30, 1932, in Springport, Mich., the daughter of Warren and Margaret (Schumacher) Holmes. She graduated from Mount Horeb High School in 1950, after which she moved to Madison and worked for AFSCME for seven years. She married Raphael “Ray” Sutter at St. Ignatius Catholic Church on Oct. 5, 1957. After their marriage, Ray and Dolores lived on Blue Valley Road in Blue Mounds Township on a dairy farm and raised five children: Tom (Katy) Sutter of Mount Horeb, Doug (Julie) Sutter of Brooklyn, Steve (Deb) Sutter of Sauk City, Lynn (Jerome) Zander of Mount Horeb, and Margaret (Mark) DeSmet of Hollandale.


Dolores was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, where she was an active member of the CCW and taught religion classes. After leaving the farm in 1980 and moving to Mount Horeb, she was a member of the St. Ignatius Catholic Church and their CCW. She enjoyed activities of the CCW and co-chaired funeral luncheons for many years. She also volunteered at Ingleside and Red Cross bloodmobile for many years. She especially enjoyed helping with grandchildren and painting ceramics for family members. She was a member of the Perry Farmerette Homemakers and later the Red Hat Society and finally “Forever Friends.” Family traditions were her special joy. Her family made her holiday celebrations very special.


Dolores is survived by her five children and their spouses; by 12 grandchildren, Trey, Phillip (Sierra) and Kevin Sutter; Savanna (Jon) Bollig; Megan, Adam and Connor Sutter; Jake (Jaclyn), Ben (Stacy), and Nick (Kaylee) Zander; and Matthew and Jonathan Ross; two step-grandchildren, Andrew Wilson and Ryan DeSmet; 16 great-grandchildren, Kolten, Oliver, Maycie, Grayson, Kaden, Graham, Ethan, Amelia, Gwen, Leo, Locklyn, Crew, Avry, Ruxin, Elaina and Lincoln; sister, Ginny Oldenburg; brother-in-law, Tom Devine; sister-in-law, Margaret Holmes; and brother-in-law, Wayne (Mary) Sutter.


She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 66 years, Ray, in August 2023. She is further preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Dave and Bill (Betty) Holmes; sisters, Carol (Glenn) Sutter and Diane Devine; brother-in-law, Norb Oldenburg; father- and mother-in-law, Joseph and Rosena Sutter; and sisters-in-law, Bonnie (Al) Wagner, Dorothy (Jim) Paquet, Marcia (Bill) O’Brien and Pat (Jim) Murphy.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. IGNATIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 109 S. Sixth St., Mount Horeb, on Friday, Nov. 3, 2023, at 11 a.m. with Father Rob Butz celebrating. Burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the church. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON CAMACHO MOUNT HOREB FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 500 N. Eighth St., Mount Horeb, on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2023, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., with the Rosary beginning at 4 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Friday.


The family wishes to thank the staff at All Saints, Ingleside, and Agrace HospiceCare for their care of both Mom and Dad. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Horeb Senior Center to support their meal programs.
