Obituary
SHEBOYGAN / STOUGHTON - John S. Kwas, age 84, died on Friday, Oct. 27, 2023, after a five-year struggle with Alzheimer’s. He was born in Racine, Wis., on Sept. 10, 1939, to John and Mary Kwas. He graduated from St. Catherine’s High School in Racine, attended University of Wisconsin-Racine, and served for six years in the National Guard. On Nov. 7, 1964, he married Sandra Jaeck who was his constant companion until his last breath.
John was a true example of the American Dream, retiring as a vice president with Schultz Savo Stores, the same company he joined 45 years prior as a grocery bagger. Always active, he loved trying new things and embraced swimming, racquetball, and biking-and later in life, golf (two holes-in-one) and tennis. He’d embrace the interests of his friends, who inspired him to become an avid bridge player, president of his parish council, and a senior hiker. John valued his friendships greatly, many of which lasted over a half a century. His faith in God yielded a profound confidence in everyone’s potential, and John sought to inspire others to be the best person they could be.
He lived his marriage vocation to the fullest, devoting himself to his family and especially to his wife, Sandy, whom he loved dearly. He was happiest at the family cottage in Door County, surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and lifelong friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Jane and Rosemary. He is survived by his wife, Sandy; one son, Michael Kwas (Kristin Knutson) of Stoughton, Wis.; two daughters, Jackie Choy (Todd Choy) and Amy Kwas (Mat DeLillo); and seven grandchildren: Justin and Brandon Choy, Danny and Stephen Kwas, and Maggie, Macie, and Ian DeLillo. He is also survived by three sisters: Sue, Ann, and Lisa; and three brothers: Joe, Rich, and Bill.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Skaalen Nursing Home for their loving care of John.
A funeral Mass will be held at ST. ANN CATHOLIC CHURCH, 323. N. Van Buren St. Stoughton, Wis., at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023, with Father Randy Budnar presiding. A reception will follow the service. A visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Saturday.
Memorials may be donated to St. Ambrose Academy, a Catholic school that John held close to his heart and the Sheboygan YMCA, where John and his family spent so much of their time.
