MADISON-Susanna Florus Dorathea Fuerstenberg, age 81, of Fall River, died peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023. She was born on Aug. 2, 1942, in Cuba City, Wis., the daughter of Clement and Leola (Hartung) Bussan.

Susanna married Robert Fuerstenberg on May 4, 1968. She was raised in rural Galena, Ill., where she helped on the family farm caring for animals and driving tractors. Susanna attended rural one-room schools (Jo Daivs County, Ill.) and Saint Mary’s Academy (Prairie du Chien, Wis.) and was a graduate of St. Mary’s Parish School (Galena, Ill.), Galena High School, and Bayless Business College (Dubuque, Iowa). She was an administrative assistant for nearly five decades in Dubuque, Iowa, and Madison, Wis., where she was proficient at writing shorthand and using typewriters and computers.

Susanna believed that retirement was not for sissies and ventured into forestry leaving a legacy of a green earth and hundreds of trees. She loved spending time with family, relatives, friends and watching nature. She enjoyed motherhood and attending events in which her children and grandchildren participated. She also enjoyed traveling, listening to music from the 1950s and 1960s, and keeping prayer time and religious services important in her life. For over four decades, Susanna and Robert volunteered on various committees and activities with St. Dennis Catholic Church in Madison.

Susanna is survived by her sons, Gary (Laurie Deyette) of Meriden, Conn., and Denis (Jenny) of Columbus, Wis.; daughter, Jill of Minneapolis, Minn.; grandchildren, Collin, Luke, John, Kathryn Rose, Matthew and Morgan; siblings, Bernadette (Neil) Spurr, Ronald (Michelle) Bussan and Jerome Bussan; and Robert’s siblings, Judith Fuerstenberg, Mary Jane Link, Margaret Diehl, Faye (Jim) Morse and Beth (Al) Stenner. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert; parents, Clement and Leola Bussan; and Robert’s parents, Clarence and Clara Fuerstenberg.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Michael Tarigopula at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, and also at the church from 12 noon until the time of the Mass on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, Mass or memorials may be made to St. Dennis Catholic Church in Madison, St. Jerome in Columbus, Wis., or the Alzheimer's Association. A special thank you to Susanna’s angels, care givers, drivers and the staff at the Meadows of Fall River. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Mom Fuerstenberg (in our grade school class we called all the parents Mom and Dad) was always such a lovely lady: so kind, so caring, so loving. She frequently helped my parents with so many activities at St. Dennis. Thank you! May her loving memory be a blessing. Lori Ann (Hewuse) Curley

Susanna was a wonderful first cousin! She always had a smile on her face and joy in her heart. She was just such a joy to visit with! There is no doubt that she has left her mark on the world and will be greatly missed. I am so sorry that we will be out-of-town and not able to attend her services. Please know that your family will be in our thoughts and prayers. May God continue to watch over all of you! God Bless!!
