Obituary

MOUNT HOREB - Mary Jo (Bowar) Koenig, age 86, of Mount Horeb, passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 9, 2023, at UW Hospital in Madison. She was born on March 20, 1937, and raised in Cross Plains.


Mary Jo graduated from Middleton High School. She married Bernhard “Benny” Koenig on June 5, 1957, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Cross Plains. They moved to the family farm in Mount Horeb where she carried out God’s plan. She loved being a wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. Later in life she worked for The Cheese Factory and A&W restaurant.


In her free time, she enjoyed playing games, doing crossword puzzles, watching tv, but most of all playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


Mary Jo was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church of St. Michael the Archangel Parish. She was named Soldier’s Angel of the year by supporting America’s service men and women. She was also recognized by R.S.V.P. of Dane County for her 20 years of service.  


Mary Jo is survived by her children, Marlene Schlimgen, Rick (Mary) Koenig, RoseAnn (Gary) Achenbach, Patty Koenig, Russell (Deb) Koenig and Sharon Koenig; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Ruth Ship and Joan Bowar; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benny; parents, Joe and LaVona Bowar; sister, Marlene Ann Bowar; brother, Marvel Bowar; parents-in-law, Joe and Mayme Koenig; and in-laws, Esther (LeRoy) Haag, Bob Ship and Bea Bowar.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. IGNATIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 109 S. Sixth St., Mount Horeb, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2023, with Father Rob Butz presiding.  A burial will follow at HOLY REDEEMER CATHOLIC CHURCH CEMETERY, 10070 Spring Valley Drive, Mount Horeb. A luncheon will follow the burial at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON CAMACHO MOUNT HOREB FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 500 N. Eighth St., Mount Horeb, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 16, 2023. A Rosary will be prayed from 3:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Monday.


Memorials may be gifted in Mary Jo’s name to the church.
