BARNEVELD / EVANSVILLE - Norbert J. Johnson, age 89, of Barneveld / Evansville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2023, surrounded by family. Norbert was born on July 11, 1934, to Clarence and Daisy (Love) Johnson, and was raised on a farm near Dodgeville. He graduated from New Glarus High School in 1953.
Norbert married Diana Skaife, his longtime friend and love, on June 15, 1958. Together they had five children. The couple farmed for many years prior to Norbert taking a culinary position at UW Hospital, where he continued his work there until he retired in 1996.
While raising his children on the farm, they enjoyed family gatherings, playing cards, snowmobiling, and hunting. Later in Norbert’s life he enjoyed golfing, watching Badgers games, listening to music with his wife, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was the great-grandchildren's biggest fan at their sporting events.
Norbert is survived by his wife, Diana Johnson; children, Bob (Linda) Johnson, Sue (Johnson) Hubbard and Dale Johnson; sisters-in-law, Brenda Johnson, Anna Skaife and Janet Skews; brother-in-law, Bill (Faye) Skews; grandchildren, Carey (Reeve) Elwood, Robert (Jenny) Johnson Jr., Robert (Courtney) LaSavage, Joshua (Shaunna) Coleman, Linnea (Deon) Zander, Lucas Johnson, Dillon Johnson, Amanda Hubbard and bonus grandchild, John T; great-grandchildren, Makayla, Hailey, Adalyn, Caleb, Mike, Gabe, Tinley and Knox; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Daisy (Love) Johnson; in-laws, William and Wilma Skews; brothers, Norman (Dorothy), Chester (Darlene), Donald (Betty), Burnell "Bud" and Dallas Johnson; sister, Mary Ellen (Eldon) Eveland; brother-in-law, Clifford Skaife; son-in-law, Joey Hubbard; daughter-in-law, Tari (Thielbar) Johnson; daughters, Kay Coleman and Shelly Johnson; grandchildren, Casey Reeve and Daniel LaSavage and Tayler Johnson, both in infancy; Carey’s fiancé and Adalyn’s father, Michael Crotty; and many other relatives and friends.
The family will be having a private service, but we invite you to join us for a celebration of life for Norbert. The celebration will take place at the BARNEVELD AMERICAN LEGION, 102 Wood St., Barneveld, from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023. Saturday is a Badgers game day, so in honor of Norbert we ask you to come in Badgers gear or red/white!
