Obituary

COTTAGE GROVE - Gerald George Stoeberl, age 70, of Cottage Grove, passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at a Madison hospital, following complications from surgery. He was born on Sept. 2, 1953, in Portage, the son of George and Mary Ann (Weiske) Stoeberl.

Gerry graduated from LaFollette High School in 1971. He was united in marriage to Amber Christianson on August 13, 1977, in Madison.

Gerry was employed by the United States Postal Service for over 40 years. He loved antiques and was a skilled appraiser, sharing his knowledge and expertise while working for an antique mall. With both his postal and antique mall customers, he was very personable and able to make people smile and laugh with his quick wit and good humor. Even when faced with difficult health circumstances in the last year, he maintained his sense of humor and positive attitude throughout. He enjoyed many police shows, especially Blue Bloods, Laurel & Hardy, the Three Stooges and westerns.

Gerry was an avid flower and vegetable gardener. He loved his dog, Star, often his companion in the workshop -- where he fixed, created, painted, and made many projects for himself, his friends and family. He and his wife, Amber, took many enjoyable trips, domestically and internationally. Although he never had children of his own, he always cared for and mentored his many nieces and nephews. Gerry placed great emphasis on "family," showing up and checking in to support his extended family over the years.

Gerald is survived by his sisters, Carol (Robert) Sliwka, Margaret "Peggy" (Craig "Kip") Marvin, Teresa "Teri" Kleist, and sister-in-law, Diane Stoeberl; nephews, Luke (Krista) Sliwka, Max (Kim) Marvin, Alex Marvin, Tony (fiancé Ashley) Raffel, Patrick (Aly) Raffel, Peter Raffel and George Stoeberl; and nieces, Maggie Sliwka, Mary (Dylan) McDowell, Hilary (Nick) Hancock, Maranda (Josh) Zamber, and Amelia Stoeberl. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Ann; wife, Amber; and brother, Thomas Stoeberl.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5101 Schofield St., Monona, at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, April 1, 2024, with Father Mark Foley presiding. Burial will take place at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Monday.

Gerry was always good natured and had a smile for everyone. I'll miss hearing his cheerful "Hi Kath!" at family gatherings. Gerry shared his bountiful tomato harvest so everyone could enjoy his labor of love. Gerry was way ahead of time when in the 1960's he made a silent film of his family and cousins at a family gathering at our Grandparent's house. Gerry was a hard working guy and a nice person. We'll miss you, Gerry.

Please extend my heartfelt sympathy to Gerry's family. He infact talked to me often of his Sisters and their children. I met him 2+yrs ago when I first started at the antique mall. We would always have great conversations about many subjects we had in common from politics, society issues, gardening and of course the collecting trends! He spoke of Amber often and he is finally rejoined her again. I asked Dave about a month ago where Gerry had been since I hadn't seen him for awhile. He informed me he was in hospital and had been for sometime. I was so sad to hear that, despite his health over the last months he was always willing to help anyone, friendly and was so approachable. I'm thankful he's no longer suffering, and I will always think of him with great fondness. Renelle Elmer (antique mall)
