Obituary

VERONA - Marlene J. Keller (nee Subera) passed away at Sun Prairie Senior Living on May 1, 2025. Marlene was born at home on October 24, 1936, to Joseph and Josephine (Fanta) Subera of rural Hillsboro, Wis. After graduating from high school, Marlene moved to Madison, Wis., and began working at Farmers Mutual Insurance Company (now American Family Insurance). One of her roommates introduced Marlene to her brother, Leonard Keller. They were married on September 26, 1959.

Marlene worked as a keypunch operator at Farmers Mutual. She later worked at Computations Unlimited processing client payrolls. She ended her career at JCPenney.

Marlene loved to garden. She tended a large vegetable garden and multiple flower gardens when she lived near Verona, Wis. She enjoyed shopping for interesting perennials and annuals to add to her flower beds and containers every year. Her mantra was “I have room for one more plant.” Kopke’s was one of her favorite places to shop.

Marlene also enjoyed baking. Her pies, cookies, and other baked goods were delicious! Holiday baking was a great excuse for Marlene to try new recipes for the large cookie platter she created every year for the holidays. Marlene also enjoyed sewing. She made clothing, dance costumes, doll clothes, quilts, and a variety of other items throughout the years.

Marlene also loved music. She listened to music daily and was often humming or singing to favorite medleys. She enjoyed attending her grandson’s piano recitals and other musical performances.

Marlene is survived by her daughters, Sandy Keller (Dave Buroker) and Paula Keller (Rod Henrichs); and her grandson, Nicholas K. Buroker (fiancée, Gabby Campagnola). She is also survived by her sister, Alice Stehr (Richard); brothers-in-law, Daniel Keller (Jeanne) and Jerry Keller (Judy); sisters-in-law, Louise Buechner (Charlie) and Lynn Mattison (Harold); and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard; brothers-in-law, David Keller and Ray Keller; and sister-in-law, Marian Keller.

A celebration of life will be held at GUNDERSON CAMACHO MOUNT HOREB FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 500 N. Eighth St., Mount Horeb, from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, with a luncheon to follow at the funeral home. A cemetery committal service will follow the luncheon at Holy Redeemer Catholic Cemetery, 10070 Spring Valley Drive, Perry Township.

The family wishes to thank the nursing staff at Sun Prairie Senior Living for the compassionate care provided to Marlene during the many years she lived there. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Waunakee Senior Center or Sun Prairie Emergency Food Pantry. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Marlene and Lenny were my God Parents. Marlene must have been in ceramics back then. I received the nicest Christmas gifts from them. Back in the day, Holly Hobby doll was popular. The next Christmas, I received a ceramic cat. Still love them both. I have both of them displayed in my home. Love my God Parents always. Maria

I worked with Marlene for several years in the 1980’s. It’s hard to imagine a sweeter, more caring, more genuine human being than she was, fun in her own understated way. And somebody who encouraged me to do the right thing with my own family when I wasn’t otherwise inclined to do so, because family was everything to her. I so appreciate having known her, and send my fondest regards and deepest sympathy to her extended family. I think the photo here summarizes everything that was so wonderful about her. She will be missed.
