Obituary

MOUNT HOREB - Susan Kay Koller, age 84, of Mount Horeb, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. She was born on November 21, 1939, in Mount Horeb, the daughter of Elmer and Julia (Hansen) Krohn.

Susan married David Koller on August 8, 1959. She worked as a teacher for 35 years and valued mentoring her students.

Susan touched the lives of her loved ones and her community across her lifetime in countless ways. Namely, she fostered the Mount Horeb High School’s gymnastics program alongside her husband, David, starting in 1974. Susan was a public school teacher by profession while also finding ways of serving others through mentorship-believing in people fiercely and steadfastly. This value of belief is carried forward by the Mount Horeb gymnastics team to this day. Susan was a bridge-builder, nurturing respect between and amongst those who surrounded her. She also coached track and field for the Mount Horeb Vikings for many years. Always proud of her family and friends, Susan took great pride in supporting others and ensured they took pride in their accomplishments as well.

Susan treasured sharing time with her loved ones, especially at the cabin she built with family  and friends on Lake Wisconsin in 1979. She had a competitive spirit, which fueled her love for Scrabble, pinochle, euchre, and Trouble. Susan was an avid sports enthusiast who rooted for the Packers and the Badgers-frequently attending games with her sister, Ann, and husband, David. Susan’s faith community at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mount Horeb meant a great deal to her. She was a proud and active member of her church and her faith shaped and guided how she built relationships with her God, her family, and all those who knew her.

Susan is survived by her son, Paul (Abby Fifer) Koller; daughter, Martha (née Koller) (Peter) Faust; as well as four grandchildren, Carson (Samuel Farrand) Faust, Lauren Faust, Rosemary Koller, and Grace Koller. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer “Dutch” and Julia O. Krohn; husband, David Lee Koller; brother, Robert "Bob" Krohn; and sister, Ann (Walter) Hamady.

A funeral service will be held at EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 315 E. Main St., Mount Horeb, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, with Pastor John Twiton presiding. Burial will take place at Union Cemetery in Mount Horeb. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday.

Susan and I were cheerleaders together at Mt. Horeb High School. She was a great colleague. As a freshman, I noted that Susan talked to and was kind to everyone she met. She was a great role model for us all. I have admired her accomplishments as a teacher, sportswoman, and family-oriented Christian.

"Suzie" was a very dear person. Her sister, Ann, was one of my best friends in high school and beyond so Suzie was a fun presence. Her life accomplishments were admirable.

We shared a backyard (and tree house) with the Kollers. So many fond memories of Mrs. Koller at home and at school. She was supportive and kind and caring. Hugs being sent to her children and family. I am sure she and Mr. Koller are starting up a team of some sort! Julie Lattimer

My family became neighbors of the Kollers right around 2000. Susan and David were always so pleasant to chat with, whether it was about our/their dogs, kids(grands), or the neighborhood. They were always friendly and positive-David whistling while he worked and Susan right alongside, taking care of their beautiful home. Susan’s spirit was infectious and is sure to live on through her kids and grandkids.

Sue was my favorite teacher in high school. Later on she was a good friend. I enjoyed our conversations. She and Dave were wonderful people.
