Obituary

MADISON - Dennis L. “Denny” Young passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 19, 2025. He was born in Boscobel, Wis., on August 29, 1937.

Denny was a devoted husband and father who always put his family first. He married the love of his life, Bonnie, on December 29, 1960. His outgoing personality and wild sense of humor followed him through his 87 years. He passed as he lived, unexpectedly. No one ever knew what he was going to say or come up with. He was a consummate storyteller about his life experiences and the mischief that he typically took part in. He wore his big heart on his sleeve, was always there to help others, get you to laugh, offer to bail you out of jail, and was memorable to everyone he met.

Denny served his country in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Germany from 1960-1962 in the 3rd Infantry Division and spent the next six years in the reserves before heading to Vietnam from 1968-1969, serving in the 826th Ordnance Company.

Denny spent 34 years working for the Madison Water Department. He was an extremely skilled equipment operator in the day, finishing his career as a City Water Inspector.

Denny had a deep-seated love of animals, Westie dogs being his favorite. Over his and Bonnie’s 64 years together, they had four: Cotton, Murphy, Winston, and Parker. He made sure his family knew if there was ever a tornado or fire that, “Someone get the dog. Oh yeah, save yourself, but get the dog.” Denny was a favorite of the neighborhood dogs as he always carried dog treats in his pockets. He always remembered the dogs, owner’s names not so much. He loved old westerns, classic country music, and bowled for decades. He always seemed to have a cup of coffee in his hand and a big smile on his face.

Denny loved spending time with his family. A favorite pastime was playing cards with his grandchildren, often playing for 6-8 hours at a time. From Denny’s time in the service, he learned he truly disliked flying and boats; however, when one of the grandkids would ask him to go on a cruise vacation, there was no way to say ‘no.’ With them, Bonnie and Denny travelled to many places, from Alaska to islands in the Caribbean.

Denny was preceded in death by his mother, Bertha McCormick; father, Kenneth Young; and many other close family, relatives, and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; daughter, Michele (Thomas Dull); son, Michael; and grandchildren, Ashley, Christopher, and Amanda.

Per Denny’s wishes, there will be no services.

The family would like to thank all who cared for Denny, especially Heather and Kelly from Agrace Hospice.

I have very fond memories of Mr. Young. I babysat for them on a few occasions when they lived on the east side of Madison. Mr. Young would walk me home, he never let me walk on curbside, he always held my arm, and he always had a great story to tell. He explained that a gentleman never let his woman walk curbside in case she was splashed by a car. Sending my condolences to the family. Julie Ann Drake
