Obituary

MADISON - Joyce Elaine Nelson passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2023. She was the baby of a loving family of 14 brothers and sisters, born on Jan. 30, 1931, in Linden, Wis., the daughter of Francis and Lydia Mae (Roberts) Fine.

Joyce graduated from Mineral Point High School. As a loving military wife and homemaker, Joyce was able to travel and see many parts of this world until their retirement when they settled in Madison to be close to their large family and her baby brother and Irish twin, Donald Dean.


Joyce loved working in her yard, playing euchre, had a fondness of butterflies and was a big fan of the Green Bay Packers and an even bigger fan of Elvis Presley. She loved the companionship of the second love of her life, her precious dog, Candy.

Joyce is survived by her daughter, Connie J. (Nelson) Kleist of Madison; son, Frank C. Nelson of Sarasota Fla.; daughter-in-law, Kris Nelson; granddaughter, Melissa J. Benefield of Indiana; grandsons, Roger N. (Angie) Kleist, Trevor (Sarah) Nelson, Tyler (fiancée, McKenna) Nelson and Jake Nelson all of Wisconsin; great-grandkids, Genevieve Sohacki of Indiana, Kameron Kleist of Wisconsin; and the last of her siblings, Lenore Gordon of Dodgeville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold I. Nelson Jr.; parents, Francis and Lydia Mae (Roberts) Fine; son, Ronald D. Nelson; son-in-law, David R. Kleist; and siblings, Clarence Fine, Leila Simpson, Lucille Enger, Worthy Fine, Arnetta Rindy, Clinton Fine, Gladys Nesheim, Chester Fine, Milo Fine, Delmore Fine, Jeanette Reison, Donald Fine and Majorie Amenda.


A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2023.  Burial will be held at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 12 noon until the time of the service on Thursday.


Thanks to everyone at SSM Health Hospice Care, especially the kind nurses for the tender loving care of our mother.

IN 1969 I MET JOYCE ELAINE NELSON 《WHAT A BEAUTIFUL NAME》JOYCE WOULD UTTER, 《WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAME) I WOULD SAY. THEN CONNIE JOYCE AND I WOULD CHUCKLE.OUR ROUTINE THE LAST 10 YRS. I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF TAKING JOYCES DAUGHTER CONNIE JEAN TO HER JUNIOR PROM IN TEXAS IN 1969. WHEN THEY MOVED TO MADISON, I WAS CRUSHED. I SOLD EVERYTHING I OWNED EXCEPT THE 63 PLYMOUTH FURY I HAD, AND GOT PERMISSION FROM MR. HAROLD AND LADY JOYCE TO COME TO WI. FOR A VISIT. HAROLD AND JOYCE TESTED MY METAL WITH A RAKE AND SHOVEL HELPING BROTHER FRANK AND OCCASIONALLY RONNIE REMOVING 16TON OF ROCK OUT OF THE FRONT AND BACK YARD. MY HANDS WERE SO BLISTERED I COULD BARELY TOUCH THE STEERING WHEEL BUT WAS ALLOWED TO TAKE CONNIE JEAN TO MILWAUKEE TO THE ZOO AND DEVILS LAKE. OUT OF SELF PRESERVATION I RETURNED TO TEXAS SINGING CRY ME A RIVER. IT WAS 24 YRS BEFORE I SAW JOYCE ELAINE AGAIN IN 2013. STILL A BEAUTIFUL LADY, WHICH RUNS IN THE FAMILY. JOYCE , CONNIE, GRANDDAUGHTER. MELISSA AND GREAT GRANDDAUGHTER GENEVIEVE. NELSONS , KLEISTS, AND BENEFIELDS,. THE FINE GENETICS WERE A BLESSING FOR FOUR GENERSTIONS.. MS. JOYCE BOXED MY EARS EVERY TIME WE PLAYED EUCHRE. I STILL LOVED HER, AND ALWAYS WILL. MAY THE LORD BE GRACIOUS TO HER AND HER BRLOVED HAROLD, AND ALL THOSE FINES .TIL WE ALL MEET AGAIN IN GLORY. Joyce Elaine, what a beautiful name, what a beautiful dame, from the county of Dane.She busted my chops playing cards, and the ways i cut the grass in her yards. I knew her first in Texas in 1969, She was a Nelson then too, but her first Last name was Fine. We shall all miss her, down here on this earth, she passed as a Nelson , but was a Fine at her birth.
