Obituary

MADISON- It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a gentle and loving soul, Dean Aini, who left this world unexpectedly July 29, 2023. He was a remarkable man whose journey from Kabul to the United States was marked by resilience, compassion, and a deep commitment to his family and community.

Born in Kabul, Dean navigated the challenges of life with courage, even as a self-proclaimed Patriot in a time of political turmoil. His unwavering pursuit of freedom led him to a new life in the United States, where he would ultimately become a proud citizen. This transition marked the beginning of a legacy that would touch countless lives.

A devoted father, Dean raised three sons with boundless love and dedication. His commitment to education and the American Dream inspired his children to achieve great heights, each graduating from college and forging their own paths. His role as a nurturing and guiding force shaped his family's future in immeasurable ways.

Upon his arrival in the United States, Dean settled in Madison, Wis., where he embarked on a journey of transformation. He navigated the challenges of communication and culture with unwavering determination, working tirelessly to create a better life for his family. From his humble beginnings he embraced every opportunity to learn and grow, all while fostering a home filled with love, resilience and unity.

In the face of adversity, Dean and his wife, Saleha, embarked on a brave venture - a Middle Eastern restaurant on State Street. Despite the challenges posed by the Persian Gulf War and the bigotry they faced, their courage shone through. Their restaurant stood as a testament to their perseverance, determination, and unwavering belief in the power of cultural unity.  If you saw Dean he most likely was wearing a Wisconsin Badger hat.  The first impression of Madison and the power of being welcomed was an empowering feeling that he proudly wore because of how he felt.

Later in life, Dean found a new path as a civilian contractor for the Department of Defense. He utilized his unique linguistic skills to bridge cultural gaps and served as a translator for the U.S. military in Afghanistan. His contributions in this capacity demonstrated his unwavering dedication to fostering understanding and cooperation between cultures, a reflection of his lifelong commitment to harmony.

Throughout his life's journey, Dean demonstrated the resilience of the human spirit, the power of love, and the ability to transcend boundaries. His memory will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.

Dean is survived by his beloved wife, Saleha; and his three sons, Mateen, Masood and Aziz and their families. He leaves behind a legacy of love, unity and the indomitable spirit of a man who turned adversity into opportunity.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Dean's name to JSS of Madison (jssmadison.org) an organization dedicated to resettling and providing homes for immigrants and refugees, a cause that was near and dear to his heart.

May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire us all to embrace the values of love, resilience and unity.

"In the tapestry of life, his thread may have been cut, but the beauty of his presence will forever remain woven in our hearts."

Saleha, I am so sorry to hear of Dean's passing. The two of you shared such a rich life of experiences together. It has been said that the best we can hope for during our loses is there comes a time when the memories bring a smile to your lips before bringing a tear to your eye. Praying for you and your family.
