Obituary
MADISON - Oscar Emil Seibel, beloved husband, father and grandfather, and U.S. Army Veteran, died at home in Madison after a long illness on Monday, Jan. 29, 2024, at age 78. He attended Waterloo High School and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and worked as Vice President of Wealth Management at BMO/M&I Bank of Madison for decades.
Oscar is survived by his wife of 48 years, Karen Seibel; his son, Christopher Bakken, his wife, Allison Bakken, and their children Sophia, Alexander and Theokritos; his son, Aaron Bakken, his wife Sara Bakken, and their children, Dahlia, Gwendolyn, Isabelle, and Liam; his daughter, Heidi Michel, her husband, Kyle Michel, and their daughter, Saskia; and his sister, Marjorie Wernick. He is predeceased by his parents, Norma and Oscar Otto Seibel of Watertown, Wis.
Oscar stood as the emotional center of his loving family along with his wife, Karen; they were introduced to one another by Van and Judy Valaskey, who remain their closest friends. Feasts at the Seibel family table--always laden with good food--were open to all guests, and Oscar was famous for his generosity and hospitality. He also loved expanding his perspective through travel, ever curious about new people and new places. Oscar lived his life in service to others, impacting hundreds of people in positive ways throughout his lifetime. He celebrated those who combined kindness and a tireless work ethic, while modeling those attributes himself. He will be deeply missed by his friends, and by those he considered part of his extended international family, many of whom came from Turkey, Greece, and Vietnam.
A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church, 2427 Church St., Cross Plains, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024. Visitation will be held at the church from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 9, 2024, and again from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Martin’s Lutheran Church or Agrace HospiceCare.
The family wishes to express gratitude to Agrace Hospice Care and Home Instead, who assisted Karen in her incredible home care for Oscar. Their help assured that his wish to remain at home was honored. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Said, Dr. Marty and all the staff at UW Hospital and clinics for their compassionate care for Oscar.
