Phyllis and Al lived across from the Thiel family on Mayflower Drive. My husband Dick Thiel taught with Al at Middleton High School but he passed away in 1987. When Tom was born my two daughters were just thrilled to have a baby in the neighborhood. My daughters Julie and Jill Thiel did babysit for Tom. Al and Phyllis were wonderful neighbors and though they lived a quiet life, one could always see them sitting on their chairs in front of their garage. Al had this deep laugh and Phyllis always was cheerful. I remember when I had some surgery, she and I would walk every day. When we walked up to the highschool and back. we knew we had accomplished a good exercise. I remarried in 1991 so moved away from the neighborhood so did not see Al or Phyllis very much but I have good memories of time spent with both of them. Madeline Thiel Laufenberg

My name is Layne Close. I lived at 2210 Mayflower Drive. Our family moved out of that home in Middleton in July of 1968, so our time as neighbors to Allen and Phyllis was short. I was also not yet 16 years old. On a visit back to Middleton, I currently live in Stoughton, I stopped by the old homestead. The owner at that time was somewhat wary of this strange man appearing at her door and claiming to have lived in the house for almost 16 years of his early life. She had a few questions, but quickly suggested that I go next door and talk with Allen and Phyllis. Now I was wary. I had not had a lot of interaction with them, I moved out as an immature 15 year old. However Allen and Phyllis were surprised and enthusiastic to sit down and spend the better part of that afternoon catching up on what had happened in my life and our family. My old image of them as the “scary math teachers” quickly melted away. They were warm, sharp, interested and, I think, very happy to spend the time learning about me and what had happened to our family. I missed the fact that Allen had passed in 2022, and I am so sorry to now hear of Phyllis’ passing. My condolences to the rest of the family. I am so glad that I took a chance that afternoon to talk to them and get to know them just a little bit.
