Marvin Joseph Urban

Madison - Marvin Joseph Urban, age 91, of Madison, passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at UW Hospital and Clinics. He was born on April 23, 1933, near Yuba, (Vernon County) Wis., the son of Joseph and Anna (Kaukl) Urban. The family moved to Madison during World War II in 1941.

Marvin graduated from Madison East High School in 1952. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War in the critical Fulda Gap of West Germany. On Aug. 6, 1960, he married Virginia Mae (Anderson) Urban at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Madison.

Marvin worked as a business system foreman for Bell Telephone/AT&T, retiring on Dec. 31, 1989. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 8483 and the American Legion Post 481, and was a member of the EAA. He was on the Town of Burke Planning Commission (26 years) and also served as Chief Election Official.  He devoted countless hours over the years volunteering at the VA Hospital (26 years) and at St. Paul Lutheran Church as well as assisting the March of Dimes.  He was a long-time member of the Boy Scouts of America and the Madison Drum and Bugle Corps from 1946 to 1950 playing the bugle.  He played the tuba for the Madison East High School Marching Band.  He volunteered with Sun Prairie Cub Scout Pack 43 when his sons were members. He was also very active in the Telephone Pioneers of America (H. W. Schroeder Life Club) supporting Fishing Has No Boundaries, Badger Honor Flight, the Talking Books program, Ronald McDonald House, Badger Football Camp Randall Elevator Crew, and by painting USA maps on grade school playgrounds around the area.  He was honored to have participated himself in the Badger Honor Flight # 17 on Oct. 14, 2014.

Marvin is survived by his sons, Daniel Urban, Steven Urban and Keith (Shannon) Urban; grandsons, Joshua Urban, Michael Urban and Samuel Urban; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Virginia.

A funeral service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2126 N. Sherman Ave., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday July 3, 2024, with Pastor Grant Sorenson presiding. Burial with Military Honors will be held at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held at Gunderson East Funeral and Cremation Care, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, and also at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday.
