MADISON - On June 11, 2023, Ramon Eugene Stade passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 91 in his Madison, Wis., home after taking his daily walk.


Ramon was born on Aug. 20, 1931, near Algoma, Wis., to Mabel (Gregor) Stade and Robert Thiry.  He later took his adoptive father Hugh Stade’s last name. Upon graduation from Algoma High School, he served in the U.S. Army from 1949-1954 where he developed a lifelong love of scratchy wool blankets. He then received a bachelor’s degree in history from UW-Madison and began teaching high school in Wausau, Wis.


In June 1964, he married Patricia Miller. Shortly after the birth of their first son, Nathan, they sought adventure, moving to East Africa where they lived for nine years, during which time they had a second son, David. Ramon completed a master’s degree in secondary education at Michigan State and the family subsequently returned to the U.S., settling in Stevens Point, Wis., in 1976.  Ramon served as an assistant principal for many years at SPASH and was especially proud of the students he helped guide through discipline issues to their GEDs and into productive lives in the community.  


Upon retirement, Ramon and Patricia moved to Madison in 1999 where they resided until her death in 2020, and now his passing. Ramon is survived by his sons, Nathan and David, and adopted son, John Viste; his beloved granddaughters, Isabella and Samantha; twin sister, Ramona, and younger sister, Gail.


He never lost his love for reading, nature walks, history, politics, gardening, correcting others’ grammatical errors, camping with his family, complicated card games, and fabricating Bible verse.

I was surprised to see that my favorite teacher at Wausau Senior High had been living here in Madison all these years. I have often credited him for my love of history and my progressive politics due to my fortunate assignment to his World History class many years ago (early 1960's). I still remember him bringing David Obey to speak to our class. Dave Obey (Democrat) was then initially seeking a seat in the Wisconsin legislature which he won in the fall election. He later become our progressive Congressman from the 7th District. Thank you "Mr. Stade" and rest in peace. I will always remember you.

Sorry to hear of his death. I had him as a World History teacher in 1963 and frequently thought of him and many of the things he had to say. He opened my eyes to how the world worked. He infused his teaching with his strong Christian belief; the Christian belief as exemplified by the sermon on the mount. He didn’t teach us so much using words as by example. I will miss him and remember him. I haven’t seen him in 59 years, but still remember him as if it were yesterday.

I wish to offer my deepest sympathy to the Stade family on the loss of Ramon. For two decades, I taught at SPASH where Ramon served as our assistant principal. I had dealing with him often as my students were of the more challenging type. Ramon earned my respect and admiration as a darn good administrator, concerned about the school, the staff AND the students. Ramon was a caring professional who tried his hardest to find a workable solution to the problem that was more than just an authoritarian decree. He truly was a good administrator. My wife, Leigh, was a student in his social studies class at Wausau High School and was impressed by his thoughts on history. She said that Ramon filled her, and many of her fellow class mates, with an appreciation of politics and how it determined history. She strongly felt that Ramon was a great teacher and remembers feeling sad when he moved on. Finally, Ramon was involved with both Sheepshead and Bridge nights at his home. Often, a sub was needed to fill in for an ill or traveling member and I would be asked. The members of his card groups were diverse – in political views, religion, and wealth. For me, it was more fun to listen to the discussions on current issues than to play cards. When feelings started to run high, you could count on Ramon to clarify and try to calm the group. He and Pat were great hosts. Know that Ramon was a one-of-a-kind individual. He truly was a Renaissance man, surviving in a sea of youthful hormones. This world certainly needs more Ramon Stades if we are to survive. It was an honor to know him.
