Obituary

MIDDLETON - Syrie Schmitz, age 71, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 3, 2023. She was born on Nov. 7, 1951, in Iron Mountain, Mich., the daughter of Stanley and Marjorie (Meyers) Nestingen.


Syrie graduated from James Madison Memorial High School, then continued her studies at UW-Oshkosh, where she received her bachelor’s degree.  She was united in marriage to Thomas Schmitz on Aug. 15, 1981, in Madison.


Syrie worked as a teacher for the Madison Area Metropolitan School District for over 25 years before her retirement, primarily working at the school now known as, Vel Phillips Memorial High School. She enjoyed knitting, reading, volunteering and especially spending time with her family and friends.


Syrie is survived by her husband, Thomas; four sons, Matthew (Kristin) Schmitz, Casey Schmitz, Cole (Kelly) Schmitz and Robby Schmitz; grandchildren, Charlette Schmitz, Brooke and Ty Schmitz, and Haley and Clare Schmitz; and sisters, Kris (Frank) Nestingen-Palm and Julie (Donna Stoneham) Nestingen. She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Marjorie; and niece, Julia Nestingen-Palm.


In keeping with Syrie's wishes a private family event will take place at a later date.  Memorials may be made in Syrie’s name to the Julia Nestingen-Palm Art Scholarship (https://wccf.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/create/fund?funit_id=1186) or a charity of your choice.

My dear cousin, Syrie: You left us too soon. We cousins will always treasure our memories of summer visits to Tolman Terrace, playing with Duke, dinners on your back patio, our fathers playing cribbage and mothers' long time friendship. I fondly remember your genuine interest and enthusiasm in our lives, your interesting background living in Dacca and the cool way you wore a bracelet above your elbow. I envied your hair and reputation as the "Farrah Fawcett of Madison," admired your commitment to teaching and then motherhood. You gracefully segued to becoming a young grandmother and still appeared vivaciously youthful. You, Kris and Julie bravely eased your parents' passing and after my mother's memorial Syrie was the cousin who stepped up to hold an open house after the service. I wish I could hold my house open for you, Syrie, but even better, you dwell in the House of the Lord. Say, hi, to those dearly departed whose laughter still lingers. We shall meet again, pain free, to laugh under a summer moon. May the perpetual Light of God shine upon you. Amen. Love, Leslie

My heart was so shook seeing the obituary announcing Syrie's death. She was a spark of joy and kindness. I have wonderful memories of raising our kids in the same neighborhood and great memories of her dedicated work as a special needs teacher. Huge hugs to all of her 'boys' and her sweet grandchildren. She was a cherished person to the Fischer family, no doubt. Rest in Peace, sweet girl.

So it is 2024 and we often chatted on messenger. I so enjoyed being your cottage mate in Door County when we were young and free! I was so sad to see you have passed on, but I am excited to see you sometime in the future with all your family and friends in heaven! I cherish the cookbook you gave me too.
