Obituary

OREGON - Susan Ellen Sather, age 75, of Oregon, passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023, at St. Mary's Hospital. She was born on Feb. 23, 1948, in Oregon, the daughter of Alfred and Patricia (Coffey) Sather.


Susan owned and operated her own in-home day care in Oregon for over 40 years. She was an active member of Holy Mother of Consolation Catholic Church and the Oregon Historical Society. She enjoyed cooking, baking, entertaining, and traveling to visit family.


Susan is survived by her niece, Erin (Troy Cooley) Sather; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Patricia; brother, Richard Sather; and nephew, Ben Sather.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at HOLY MOTHER OF CONSOLATION CATHOLIC CHURCH, 651 N. Main St., Oregon, at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 12, 2023, with Father Gary Wankerl presiding. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON OREGON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 1150 Park St., Oregon, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2023, and also at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Friday.

I am Susan's cousin, eight years her senior and have always stayed in touch with her mostly by telephone and mail when I lived in Europe or Los Angeles where she came to visit 3 or 4 times. She always kept me informed about her life in Oregon, and I am very thankful for all the friends and neighbors who helped Susan, especially through the last years. I will miss our chats. We were Susan's neighbors for only a year, but we enjoyed getting to know her. She was so warm and lovely to talk to, and her special, homemade Chex Mix was a hit in our house! Wishing comfort to her friends and loved ones at this time.

Susie was my babysitter when I was young. I have so many great memories from those few short years. She was an amazing cook making us lefsa, Chex Mix and endless cookies. She'd open the door to the attic and on the steps would be tins of treats that we would wait patiently to receive. She made nap time special, getting to sleep in her room and selecting a music box to wind up and play while we drifted off to sleep. Those music boxes were so magical. I am so blessed to have had her in my life, she was strict with the rules but always compassionate. Thank you, Susie, for your loving care. May you rest in peace.
