Obituary

SPRING GREEN- Erik Duckert passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2023, at the age of 49, after a brief 4-month battle with glioblastoma, a stunningly aggressive form of brain cancer. He leaves behind a family devastated.


If you knew Erik, you understood that his core purpose was taking care of those he loved, and we were well loved. He was a gentle and comfortable man with the knack for making one feel at ease. He liked to bake and garden, breathe the fresh air and binge Netflix, tinker around the house and work until he solved the problem. There was very little he wouldn’t try. In his last days he was still researching new recipes, making plans for the summer garden, and cracking wise. He was hopeful.


Erik was born on Sept. 29, 1973, in Madison, he graduated from Lodi High School (1992) and UW-Oshkosh (1996). After a brief period in education Erik transitioned to a career in network services working first for Anchor Bank (Old National) and spending his final 13 years at Rural Mutual Insurance, both in Madison.


Erik is survived by his wife and best friend, Megan and son, Miles (Mark Rastenis) Duckert. Also left behind are his mother, Maureen Duckert; sister, Kay Bakke; father-in-law, Michael Mayer; mother-in-law, Shirley Mayer; brother-in-law, Caleb Mayer; many loving friends; and much extended family. He was preceded in death by father, Douglas.


A memorial gathering will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2023.

I am very sad to hear of Erik's passing. He was a great teammate and always willing to help. From my perspective he had a unique sense of humor and his intelligence he kept just under the surface but he was a brilliant man. That is just who he was. At times when you thought he may not know or have the answer, he did or always found out. I'm struggling to find words. During our last talk there was some optimism with his fight and HOPE for his return. I now see that was more hope and love as we will miss him dearly. I continue to struggle for words but just needed to show some love and respect for a friend and teammate.
