MADISON - Allen Lee Bartels, age 76, passed away on Sunday, March 19, 2023, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, Wis., surrounded by his family.


Allen was born on Nov. 5, 1946.  He graduated from Muscoda High School in 1964 and served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam.  Allen married his high school sweetheart, Carol, on May 18, 1968.  He was employed by Madison Gas and Electric for 37+ years.


Allen is survived by his wife, Carol (Hying) Bartels; his children, Brian (Tammy) Bartels, Laura (Tim) Baker, Karen (Chris) Kleine and Brent Bartels; eight grandchildren, Nathan and Nicole Bartels; Megan (fiancé, Justin), Emily (Mitch) Paap, and Grace Baker; and Emma and Natalie Kleine and Cash Bartels; siblings, Diane, Charlie and Mike (Sherry) Bartels; and best friends, Steve and Maureen Kraak (whom he was scheduled to take the Badger Honor Flight with on April 8, 2023). He was preceded in death by his infant son, Chad (March 1973); and his parents, Hazel and Wilfred Bartels.


A visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, 2023. Services will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, on Thursday, March 23, 2023. A Rosary in chapel will begin at 9:30 a.m., Visitation will follow from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11 a.m.  Eulogies will follow from 12 noon until 1 p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Family and friends will depart from St. Dennis at 1 p.m. to travel to St. John’s Cemetery in Muscoda for his burial with military honors to begin at 2:45 p.m.  Family and friends who wish to view the Mass via LIVE STREAM may visit Allen’s obituary page at www.gundersonfh.com and click on the Live Webcast Link at 11 a.m.

Dear Carol and family, our deepest sympathy, prayers and love to all of you. Allen was very special to us. We were so fortunate to have Allen and Carol as neighbors for 25 years. I loved to see how beautiful his yard always was. It looked like a golf course! We had to have a lawn service come in so ours looked somewhat like Allen’s yard. We always enjoyed visits over the fence! I know Allen has a special place in heaven. Rest in Peace and God’s Blessings, Al!

I had the great pleasure of working with Al for many years, and I have a lot of fun memories working together on many sites in downtown Madison during the construction boom. Even in those hectic times, Al always found the time to provide advice or help in some way. One of my favorite MGE'ers! Rest in Peace, Al.
