Obituary
MADISON / MUSCODA - Lucy Troia, age 94, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, March 1, 2026. She was born on May 22, 1931, on a dairy farm in Muscoda, Wis., to Helen and Otto Bomkamp.
As a young adult, Lucy moved to Madison and began working at Piggly Wiggly, where she met Sam Troia. They were united in marriage on September 1, 1952, and together raised six children. After starting her family, Lucy ran a home daycare, caring for many Van Hise neighborhood children alongside her own.
Lucy and Sam built a life centered on family and faith. After retirement, they moved to their beloved cottage in Muscoda, where Lucy enjoyed tending her large garden and hosting family.
A devout Catholic, Lucy and Sam were deeply involved in St. John the Baptist Church. Lucy dedicated countless hours to St. Vincent de Paul, first volunteering at the thrift store, later becoming a staff member, and also serving as a Vincentian through the church. She often shared her passion for service with her grandchildren, taking them along to Vinny’s, where they helped bag items or work the register. When their grandchildren stayed with them, Lucy and Sam would also bring them along to help clean the church each week, turning the work into a game while quietly instilling faith, service, and Vincentian virtues.
Lucy loved playing Euchre, Scrabble, and other board games with her family. She could play from sun up to sun down and beyond! She also enjoyed an occasional Korbel and 7-Up On The Rocks while partaking in an evening of games with her family. Lucy loved to crochet and was always working on a project, creating countless afghans, kitchen towels, and newborn hats that she donated to St. Mary’s Hospital. For years, she also shared her talents at local craft fairs, bringing joy to others through her work. Lucy’s favorite time of the year was her annual vacation Up North. For more than 50 years Sam and Lucy went to Pelican Lake with their kids and then their grandchildren to the same resort. Eventually she also traveled to St. Germain as well. Going Up North every year was a tradition she upheld until just a few years ago, a tradition all of her kids have continued in some capacity.
Above all, Lucy cherished her family. Time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren brought her immense joy. Her love and devotion left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. We will miss our family matriarch every day but are grateful for her love and the impact she made on our lives and the many wonderful years we had together.
Lucy is survived by her children, Rick (Jackie) Troia, Bob (Deb) Troia, Denis (Caroline) Troia, John (Laura) Troia, Marie (David) Ramirez and Tim (Tracy) Troia; grandchildren, Lisa (Jim), Matt, Joshua, Sara (Ken), Jennifer, Taylor, Regina (Mike), Rachel (Ryan) and Chris; great-grandchildren, Annabelle and Scottie Koberle, and Ellie Kalscheur, Amelia and Elouise Arnold; her sisters, Agnes Pogreba and Marge Roh; a brother, Ken Bomkamp; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Bomkamp, Diane Bomkamp and Bea Troia; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sam Troia; their infant son, Sam Troia Jr.; her parents, Helen and Otto Bomkamp; siblings, Mary Anne Blabaum, Alice Schuett, Paul Bomkamp, and Loretta Wilcox; and in-laws, Al Pogreba, Jim Roh, Joe Ryan, Warren Blabaum, Gean Tisdale, Harry Scheutt and Red Wilcox.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. MARIA GORETTI CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5313 Flad Ave., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. Burial will be held at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Wednesday.
The family would like to thank the staff at All Saints Assisted Living for their compassionate care and love they gave Lucy in her final years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Lucy’s memory to St. Vincent de Paul Madison or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
