Obituary

COTTAGE GROVE - Isobel Maciver, of Cottage Grove, passed away on Tuesday, Mar. 14, 2023, at her residence. Daughter of Donald and Norma “Daisy” Maciver, Isobel was born in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland.

Isobel and Kyle met in 1993 at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, where they were post-doctoral research fellows in adjacent laboratories. They married in 1996 and joined Promega Corporation soon after. Isobel began her career at Promega as a technical writer, advancing to manage Scientific Communications, and later becoming a Marketing Services Manager. Isobel left a legacy of kindness, support, wisdom, generosity, grit and humor that her colleagues will cherish for years to come.

Isobel was a loving, caring mother, wife and dear friend. She enjoyed running, knitting, gardening, traveling and a good mystery. She evangelized knitting by teaching others, including her work colleagues. She shared the abundance of giant zucchini from her garden with her colleagues every year, and her quiet sense of humor instilled a respect for Scottish humor in all who were fortunate to know her. Isobel volunteered for children’s church at Door Creek Church when Iain and Isaac were young and continued for many years afterward. She taught her family how to coexist with house cats, and then later she learned the differences of raising dogs.

Isobel is survived by her husband, Kyle Hooper; and sons, Iain and Isaac Hooper. She is further survived by her siblings residing in Scotland, brother, Derek Maciver, and sister, Catherine (Maciver) Burrows; nieces, Alison (Burrows) Irvine, Abigail Burrows and nephew, Stephen Burrows. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A funeral service will be held at DOOR CREEK CHURCH, 6602 Dominion Drive, Madison, at 12 noon on Friday, March 24, 2023. Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. A graveside service will follow at Highland Memory Gardens at 1:30 p.m.

The family wishes to thank Promega Corporation, numerous colleagues and neighbors for all of the love, care and compassion during this time.

Memorials may be made to the UW Carbone Cancer Center in remembrance of Isobel (www.wiscmedicine.org/cancer). Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Oh my… such a sweet sweet lady, mom, wife & friend! So sorry, such a bittersweet moment in your family Kyle! Sorry i haven’t visited all of you for so long. I had my church prayer group pray for all of you. In Choir at church we sing a song called “I speak Jesus”. There is a phrase in it that is so appropriate now. Isobel’s FAITH BECAME SIGHT. Oh my such perfect peace and Glory she is seeing now! Love to all of you! Eithel Mae

Isabel and I were roommates...before she met Kyle. I learned a lot from her...knitting, the difference between a flashlight and a torch....and how beautiful her hometown of Stornaway was in the fall. We laughed often, prayed together regularly and enjoyed cooking in out tiny kitchen. Lovely memories of a lovelier lady.

It was with shock and sadness that I learned that Isobel had left us. Although we were family, our paths had not crossed often since we were maybe 16-17 years old. We followed each other academically and then both moved to the US, where I eventually had the pleasure to join her and Kyle on their wedding day. Isobel's calm, balance and quiet positivity were what I remember and that she was a pleasant and easy person to be with. More recently, there was the hope of catching up again in person in Scotland, but that reunion will now be for another time and place and I am comforted by her faith. I wish the Lord's presence and comfort for Kyle, Iain, Isaac, as well as Derek and Catherine at this sad time. Alasdair

I knew Isobel through Promega. She started there a week before I did. She was the kindest person I have ever known. She was also very funny and always a joy to work with and talk with. She had such a wonderful, beautiful presence, that even if you only met her once, you would not forget her. My heart goes out to Kyle, Ian and Isaac. You are in my prayers.

Isobel has been a great colleague and a wonderful person to share time with. I wasn't aware of her condition so the tragic news of her departure was a total shock for me. She will be missed. My deepest simpathy goes to her family. Giuseppe
