Obituary

MADISON - Elizabeth E. Noel, age 89, of Madison, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2023, at Meriter Hospital. She was born on March 12, 1933, in Kenosha, Wis., the daughter of Archibald and Mary (Robinson) Naysmith.


Elizabeth graduated from UW-Madison with a Library Science Degree and worked as a librarian for the UW-Madison Medical College Library until 1968. Elizabeth’s love for books is an understatement, it was her passion. She collected books and cataloged and organized her own personal library within her home - a very eclectic collection. What she focused on most in her later years was the collection of fiction books, especially the cozy murder mysteries she would obsessively read.  She was a charter member of the Madison Chapter of SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) along with her husband, Wesley. This is when her persona, Fiona McGregor, was established. As part of the SCA, she was elected KAHN of the Household of the Great Dark Horde, several times, a position she likened to herding cats.  Lifelong friendships and unity were developed over the years. Fiona enjoyed miniature toys, and had always hoped to acquire all the tools and materials to create new toys, but that remained a dream.


Fiona is survived by her daughter, Katherine H. “Rena” (Josh Snyder) Noel; stepson, George C. (Charlotte) Noel; sister, Margaret; and brother, Archibald ‘Rob’ (Sherry) Naysmith. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Wesley Noel.

I met Fiona shortly after Thorbjorn had passed. I remember the 'Stead being a place of wonder, and most especially Fiona's keen sense about people. She was generous and gifted me a pair of old fencing boots that belonged to her late husband. 25 years later, I remain a fencer in the SCA, and may not have ever picked up a sword if it wasn't for those boots. Rest well and in peace, Fiona. I will always be grateful for your kindness.

Fiona was my friend. I met her in my shop and she spent many an hour visiting, chatting, teaching me about life and being Fiona. I loved her dearly and will miss knowing she’s in the world. I wish there was more time, but I cherish the times we spent. Thank you Fiona for being who you are.

WOW! What to say about Betty. She was no "cookie-cutter" lady. She was her own person in every way, and if you accepted her that was great, but if you didn't, that was fine, too. She was my (step) mother-in-law, and she was encouraging, kind, intelligent, and special in an indescribable way. I did not spend a lot of time with Betty, nevertheless, she enriched my life.
