Obituary

LODI - Robert "Bob" Schwister, age 87, peacefully passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2023, at Agrace HospiceCare.


Bob was born on October 18, 1935, in Beaver Dam, WI, the son of John and Olivia (Kaiser) Schwister.


After graduating from Lodi High School, Bob proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1955 - 1957.  He married Marilyn Miller on November 29, 1958.


Bob was employed as a butcher in the family grocery store in Lodi and then Reed's Supermarket in their meat dept. before joining Michel’s Plumbing and Heating.


Bob loved being outside, working and taking care of the family farm and horses. He quietly handled all the behind-the-scenes details for traveling to horse shows and horse camping. Bob enjoyed coffee with his friends, horse camping and visiting with many dear friends at horse shows, but he especially loved seeing his grandchildren and great grandchildren and spending time with family.


Bob will always be remembered for his cheerful smile, colorful stories, and warm demeanor.  Anyone he met would feel they now had a new friend.  He was also very resourceful and ingenious.


In addition to Marilyn, his wife of 65 years, survivors include his daughter, Renee (Martin) Smith; son, Michael (Lynn) Schwister; four grandchildren, Ross (Rylee) Schuchardt, Emily (Chris) Monger, Sarah Schwister (Josh), Molly Schwister; six great-grandchildren, Gabriel Stinson, Easton, Otto, and Jack Schuchardt, Madelyn, and Waylon Monger; step grandchildren Nikki (Trent) Paffenroth  and Jake Wipperfurth; step great grandchildren Paxton and Trasen Paffenroth; his brother, Paul (Mary) Schwister; and other relatives and many friends.


Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, John and Joanne Schwister; and his sister, Helen Schwister.


A celebration of life honoring Bob will be held at the family farm in August.
 

Memorials may be made to Agrace HospiceCare or the Paul Carbone Cancer Center.


The family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Agrace HospiceCare, the UW Hospital, and the Carbone Cancer Clinic for their loving care of Bob.

There are so many wonderful memories of Bob, but one stands out for my family. We were all attending a horse show in Iowa. WE were like one big happy family, the WAHA group. When It was time to load up and head home, out truck had a major breakdown. We would have to stay in Iowa until it got fixed. A few days at least. Well, not according to Bob. He loaded his family and horses up and headed for home, telling us he would turn right around and come back for us. Six hours one way. And he and Marilyn did just that. We were rally stranded, as our camper was on the back of the truck. Our two horses, "Z" and Shan were fine in the barn facilities, so we hung out with them till Bob and Marilyn returned. They loaded us all up and turned right round and took us back to our farm in Brooklyn, Wi. Three six hour runs, just to take us home. It doesn't get any better than that. But that was Bob, he just gave 100% of himself at all times. For anyone in need. And the whole Schwister family was just like family to us. I still see them that way, and their loss is our loss. Rest in Peace Bob Schwister, you were one special man....

Bob was a good friend growing up on Roller Ave. Was sub on his paper route many years, he also taught me to smoke, rubber bands in a pipe.

I remember Bob building a series of ramps for cats/kittens in the indoor arena while insisting "I am NOT getting soft." It tickled me then and whenever I think of it. He had so much kindness. Deepest sympathy to the entire family. Wendy Carlson
