MOUNT HOREB - Donald N. “Don” “Bonzo” Magnuson, age 71, passed away at UW Hospital on Feb. 9, 2023. He was born on Oct. 9, 1951, in Madison, Wis., to Russell and Janice (Nelson) Magnuson. The first of three children, Don grew up in Springdale Township, on the Magnuson Family Farm. He graduated from Mount Horeb High School in 1969. He married the love of his life and best friend, Mae “Maisy” (Breunig), on April 29, 1972, at St. Norbert’s Catholic Church in Roxbury.

Don was a big man with a huge heart and voice. He was incredibly caring and generous and loved being surrounded by his family, friends and nature. He had an impeccable memory and an amazing sense of humor. Don had a way like no other of telling stories and found great joy in making others laugh. He was a phenomenal husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, but his favorite role was being Grandpa. There never was a dull moment with him while playing cards and seeing who could tell the funniest stories or jokes.

Don worked 36 years for Dane County Highway. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. Don was a charter member of the Deer Creek Sportsmen's Club. He took pleasure in cooking for many people and oversaw many Game Feeds and Fish Fries. Don raised Beagles for many years and was a member of the Wisconsin Beagle Club.

Don is survived by Mae, his loving wife of 50 years; daughter, Brenda (Shawn) Hagedorn of Whitewater; and son, Bernhard “Ben” (Linda) Magnuson of Mount Horeb. He is also survived by his sister, Mary (Leo) Humphrey; brother, Tom (Penny) Magnuson of Verona; and grandchildren, Ava and Julia Magnuson, and Emmi and Ty Hagedorn. Additionally, he is survived by several very special nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents; and father and mother-in-law, Vincent and Lidwina Breunig.
