FITCHBURG - On Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023, Ned William Finnell, 54, a beloved son, brother and uncle, passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, Wis., following a cardiac event. Ned was born to Judith and Ned Finnell at Hayward Memorial Hospital. He and his twin brother, John, were the New Year’s babies born on Jan. 8, 1969.


Ned graduated from Hayward High School in 1987 and the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1994 with a degree in Engineering Mechanics with an emphasis in aerospace engineering. He then lived in Boulder, Colo., for seven years working for Starsys Research Corporation and completing his Master of Business Administration degree. He then moved to Madison, Wis., and worked in marketing for the past 25 years at the Heibing Group and Kerry Ingredients.


Ned loved attending live music concerts, traveling with his family and spending time on the lake in Hayward. He is survived by his mother, Judith (Alexander) Finnell; brothers, James (Julie) Finnell and John (Kristine) Finnell; and nieces and nephews, Matthew, Joseph, Madilyn and Dane. He also leaves behind many lifelong friends. Ned was preceded in death by his father, Ned Warren Finnell.


We have appreciated the loving support of Ned’s extended family and friends. We would like to extend a special thanks to the physicians, nurses and staff at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, Wis., for their compassion and care during his time there.

Those of us who had the pleasure of working with Ned at Kerry have been shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. It has provided us comfort to share our memories of how much we all enjoyed working with him. Ned and I would often take the elevator together way back when in the Chester Building in downtown Beloit, then in the Ironworks Building, and finally at the Kerry Center, and our exchanges always brightened my day. I was amazed that he drove from the Madison area every day, in his hard-to-miss bright yellow Jeep. Ned had several different roles within Kerry over the 16-1/2 years we worked together, and thankfully they were roles that had him as a constant in mine. He would respond immediately to anything I ever needed, and whenever there would be something he needed from me, I always wondered in what language he would say "thank you." (It was usually "danke," and I would respond in kind, but sometimes we'd mix it up a little.) Ned was very good at what he did, and was so knowledgeable and would answer my queries immediately, oftentimes just picking up the phone. It was always a pleasure to hear his voice at the other end. I'm thankful Ned was such a large part of my Kerry life, and he will always be part of my best memories. I still have a ton of Ned's e-mails, and was reading a few today. It took me right back to that easy working relationship, which I know many others shared with him, too. Sending heartfelt condolences to Ned's family, loved ones, friends and colleagues.

I worked with Ned at Starsys Research in CO. He always had a smile on his face, was very kind and super sweet. Ned will never be forgotten as his memory will live on in the hearts of so many friends and family. RIP Ned...

I only knew Ned for a short time over 30 years ago but I will always remember his infectious god spirit. He lit up a room when he entered. He will be missed

Kind, funny, quick, co worker, friend. Ned had so many fun nicknames for me when we worked together at Kerry. He helped manage overtly demanding customers with patience and kindness. He knew how to diffuse irate customers which was such a valuable asset to the sales team. He introduced me to that sugary cake - HalfMoom and I’d find a box waiting for me when I travelled into Beloit from Toronto Canada. He helped make our small team feel united and close. I went to my first ever Chicago Blackhawks Game that Ned arranged for our sales team. Sitting up near the rafters and laughing and cheering, eating hot dogs and drinking local beer. Ned did it all. He was creative , dedicated the glue of our team. A friendly face. I’m so very sorry for the family. My heartfelt condolences. You will be sadly missed thought of often in my heart. Rest easy Ned.
