Obituary

BLACK EARTH - Aletha Theobald, age 79, passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at home, peacefully, with family at her side after a lengthy illness known as Multiple Systems Atrophy. Aletha was born March 22, 1945, to Clayton and Laura Garfoot of Black Earth.

She attended Black Earth Elementary School and graduated from Black Earth High School in 1963 as part of the last graduating class. She then attended the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing. Upon graduation she began her career at Methodist Hospital, then went on to the Jackson Clinic. In August of 1967 she married Chuck Theobald at the Vermont Lutheran Church.

Aletha became the RN at the Black Earth Heath Clinic in 1985 and remained there until her retirement in 2012. She was an admired and much-loved nurse to her many patients. Aletha was a dedicated wife, mom and grandma. She loved her family dearly.

After retirement she was able to spend more time sharing her love of flower gardening with Chuck. Aletha was the “master weeder,” not with a hoe but on her hands and knees - one weed at a time. She also took up quilting, making numerous beautiful patriotic quilts and donated them to Hospice Vets at the Madison V.A. Many of her quilting friends from her quilting club followed her generous lead and did the same.

Althea is survived by her husband, Chuck; daughter, Kristin (Shawn) Drager and their children, Ryan, Reese and Lauryn; son, Jason (Torie) Theobald and their children, Madee, Trey and Tyson; sister, Karen Brink; sister-in-law, Audrey Theobald, nieces and nephews; and two very special friends, Diane Roelke and Joan Skalet.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, LaVera Dickinson; brother, Dwayne Garfoot; brothers-in-law, Jerry Dickinson, Don Brink and Harvey Theobald; and sister-in-law, Maxine Stratman.

Per Aletha’s request there will be no public services.

A very special thank you to good friend and doctor, Janelle Hupp, and to the Agrace HospiceCare staff for their great care.

Memorials may be sent to Agrace Hospice Foundation, 5395 Cheryl Parkway, Madison, in Aletha’s name. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

I have such good memories of playing in her childh00d home on Center St in those little attic rooms. She was such a good friend. Gloria, Aletha and I walked to school almost every day. It makes me sad that she has passed. During her nursing years she was always kind to my mom when I took her to the Black Earth Clinic . My condolences to all of you.
