Obituary

MIDDLETON - Li “Lee” Yao, age 52, of Middleton, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023, at UW Hospital and Clinics. He was born on Oct. 11, 1970, in Beijing, China, the son of Xijiang Yao and Shumei Ji. He married Wenli Wang in 1995 in Bejing.  


Li graduated in 1994 from Tsinghua University in China with a bachelor’s degree in computer science. He studied at Marquette University from 1994-1997, where he attained his master’s degree. Li immigrated from China to the U.S. in 1994. He worked at Alliant Energy for over 15 years.


Li is survived by his wife, Wenli; daughter, Emily Yao; and son, Edward Lee Yao.


A gathering will be held at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 7435 University Ave., Middleton, from 2:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023.

I’m so saddened to learn of Li’s passing. One couldn’t ask for a better co-worker --- extremely knowledgeable, dedicated, trustworthy, kind. He made a positive difference in the world. My heartfelt condolences to Li’s family.
