Obituary

MADISON - Michael A. Quirke, age 71, of Madison, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2022. He was born on June 22, 1951, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Jeremiah and Ann (Rieder) Quirke.


Michael graduated from St. Viator High School in 1969 and Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa.  He married Lynn Barrett on Oct. 2, 1982. Michael worked in an administrative role for Family Services and Alcohol and Drug Abuse for the State of Wisconsin, retiring in 2020.


Michael is survived by his wife, Lynn; five brothers, James (Catherine) Quirke, Tim Quirke, Pat (Eileen) Quirke, Barry (Mary) Quirke and Matt (Jennifer) Quirke; two sisters, Cathy (Bruce) Nadro and Maureen (Rolf) Oxnevad; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jeremiah and Ann Quirke.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2450 Atwood Ave., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2023, with Fr. Michael Radowicz presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Wednesday.

I worked with Mike for many years in the bureau. Although he was very quiet, he was a very effective and dedicated staff member. His work was valuable for the review and planning of substance use treatment services in the state.

I have known Micheal since 1977. He traveled the State providing technical assistance and training on implementing alcohol and drug intervention and treatment policies. He was known by every County Human Service Agency as he provided valuable information on how to improve services. I first met Micheal while working in Waupaca County and continued to consult with him when I was employed in the same State agency that Micheal spent most of his career at. Micheal's work made a huge difference in improving alcohol and drug services in the State. I considered Micheal a friend and he will be missed. He left this world way too soon.

It was hard for us at the state Bureau of Prevention Treatment and Recovery when Mike retired. And now it is so sad to learn of his passing. Mike was always a very grounded, kind and gentle soul whose compassion and skilled work and mentorship live on beyond his years. My sincerest condolences. This breaks my heart to hear of Mike's passing. I worked with Mike at the State for over 14 years and sat right next to him for a the majority of that time. I'll always remember us making paper airplanes as part of a quality improvement project. His modifications always made his plane fly farther. But I too, will remember his brilliance and quiet presence. He could explain data to me in a manner that made me feel like "I got it." May you rest in Heavenly Peace Mike.

I was lucky enough to work with Mike during his final years before retirement. He was always open to answering my questions (and I had many). He was thorough, thoughtful, and tireless. He taught me valuable lessons about using and sharing data that I still use today. I have and will miss you, Mike.
