STOUGHTON - Joseph A. “Joe” Hansen, age 97, of Stoughton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2022, at Skaalen Nursing and Rehab. He was born on Oct. 8, 1925, in Stoughton, Wis., the son of Joseph and Adelia (Anderson) Hansen.


He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II from 1944 until his honorable discharge in 1946. Joe married Marylis Showers on June 19, 1948, in Stoughton.


Joe is survived by his wife of 74 years, Marylis; son, Mark (Cindy) Hansen; daughter, Mary Jo (Eric) Frey; five grandchildren, Shannon (Charlie) Appleby, Sonia (Jake) Carter, Matthew (Krista) Frey, Curt (Bao) Frey, and David (Katherine) Frey; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Karen Landerud.


Joe’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Stoughton Hospital, Skaalen and Agrace for the kind and compassionate care they gave him.

Dear Family, We are so saddened by your loss. Joe was a dear dear man and was a friend to all who knew him. We were honored to have known him and Marylis. He had a welcoming smile and time for sharing stories. He loved to travel and so did we. His love of travel and knowledge was amazing. We always enjoyed hearing of his travels. He was so informative and interesting. A visit with Joe always left us wishing we had more time. We moved to Colladay Pt in 1989 and he was one of the first to welcome us to the neighborhood. He surely made a difference in the lives he touched. He will be dearly missed and remembered fondly by all of us on the point. We send our sympathy to Marylis and family, and understand what Joe did in death as he did in life. He was always ready to help others and by donating his body to science he will also help many more. Joe hired me at Nelson Muffler in 1974 as a Draftsman. He was head of the drafting and engineering departments. A good boss and a nice guy. RIP Joe.

Joe was a fantastic man. He was the father of one of my best friends growing up, his son Mark. We would often go waterskiing on Lake Kegonsa late in the day when the water was glass-like, sometimes with two of us slaloming at once and had just a blast doing it. I often had a hard time getting up on the ski because I would always start with both feet in the ski and it would take quite a drag to get me up but Joe always hung in there with me. He also pulled 6 of us behind his boat on the Mississippi River trip we all took a couple of times with the kids sleeping in tents on the sandbars and the parents in the boats. It ‘s a great memory with Joe at the center of it all. I often felt Joe was behind my hiring at Nelson Ind. in 1980 and it put me in a career path to success, so I want to thank him and Marylis for doing that for me and my family! My condolences to Marylis, Mark, and Mary Jo and all their kids. You lost a great man and friend to very many.

To Joe's family and friend. I'm so sad for you loss. Joe was a wonderful guy. He interviewed and hired me at Nelson in 1978 where I spent my next 35 years. He was a great mentor and inspiration to me and many others. We also shared the love of sailing and iceboating. A few years back I experienced a bad iceboat crash just in front of his house. He came down and helped me recover my senses and parts of the boat. I stopped by his home many times to chat about life, kids, and stock picks. Marylis and Joe gave me one of my favorite books "Undaunted Courage" about the Lewis and Clark expedition in the early 1800's. A few months later I rode my bicycle across North America following the Lewis and Clark trial. Rest in peach Joe. You had a rich and wonderful ride. Thanks for sharing it with me.
