I just read of Jack’s passing, and wanted to pass along my condolences. When my wife Tory and I joined Orchard Ridge UCC many years ago, Jack and Jan were one of the first people to welcome us. We shared meals and movie times with them outside of regular services, and their warmth, kindness and joy made them role models for us in our lives. They also were one of those couples who seemed inseparable — we couldn’t think of Jack without Jan or Jan with Jack. I don’t think they ever knew how much we cared about them or admired them — they both had an easy grace that also was self-effacing. When I think of Jack, I think of graciousness, an impeccable fashion sense, an easy laugh, and a sparkle of joy in his eyes. We left the church later and hadn’t seen the Christians for many years, but Jack — and Jan — remain indelible in my memory. Much love to Jan. Steve Schumacher

Jack was my first “boss” when I moved to Madison after graduate school, in 1968. He was kind and generous, showing me the way to become a good budget analyst. I still remember the dinner that Jack and Janet invited me to at their home and the kindness they showed to a young kid who knew little about Wisconsin. May Jack’s memory be a blessing for all of us.

Jan and Jeff, I feel deeply saddened by the news of Jack's death. Gone is the happy smile when we met in the hall with our dinners. What a joy that we were able to share these three years together. After 50 years of being together in the early years of raising our baby, we meet again moving into Oakwood at the same time. Jack always had his special smile and some light humor over moving. We will all miss him here on second floor. My deepest sympathy, Joyce Bringe
