Jeffrey C. Pond

MOUNT HOREB - Jeffrey Carl Pond passed into eternity at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024. His body, ravaged by the disease that robbed him of his hearing, could not fight off the second battle with pneumonia this year.

Born on Flag Day, 1956, Jeff grew up mostly in New Hope, Minn., where he and his friends were as thick as thieves, many of whom he still held fast even to the day of his death. His places of work were all places he found great joy. His high school days found him tossing sacks and unloading rail cars at Robbinsdale Farm and Garden. After a brief stint in college, he worked for the railroad service company laying and repairing rail in the upper Midwest. Then came his career. In his mid-20s he began working for the U.S. Postal Service first in downtown Minneapolis then in Madison, Wis. Once again, and to no surprise to those that knew him, Jeff made many dear and wonderful friends who continued to visit him to the end of his days.

Jeff loved concerts before and after he lost his hearing. A classic rock junkie, he knew the lyrics to most any solid rock song before 1979 and could tell you details to every concert he’d been to. Growing up loving dogs, he had some special four-legged friends. Bandit earned a special place inked to his shoulder. After Bandit’s passing, he took to cats, enjoying the companionship of Lucy, and then Louise.

A sports fan of all things Minnesota, he never got to see a Viking Super Bowl victory (will anybody?) but did get to see the loss to Pittsburgh in person. The two Twins World Series banners were a special joy to him.

Jeff is survived by his brother, Keith (Tracy) Pond; and (as a proud uncle) by nephews, Jeremy (Tiffany) Pond, Andrew (Alicia) Pond, Tyler (Rebecca) Pond and Austin (Bailee) Pond, Emma Pond, and Kara (fiancé, Joseph Newton) Pond. He is also survived by two uncles and their wives and two aunts. Of special note, his aunt, Diane Smith, cared for him when he was an infant and when he was infirmed in his final years. He is preceded in death by his mother, Barbara (Howard) Pond, Gilbert O. Pond; his stepmother, Janet (Runnoe) Pond; and grandparents, Gilbert and Vera Pond and Vincent and Rosina Runnoe.

A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 9, 2024. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 9, 2024.
