Betty Burkard

MADISON - Betty Jane (Mueller) Burkard, age 83, passed away on Nov. 25, 2022, after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was born on Dec. 4, 1938, in Milwaukee, Wis., to Carl and Erna Mueller, both of whom were German immigrants. Betty was known for her love of reading, a mathematical whiz, and her wicked sense of humor.

After graduating from high school, she attended UW-Milwaukee until her marriage to Douglas Burkard in 1960. They had four children and she remained a homemaker until their divorce in 1979, when Betty and the kids relocated to Madison, Wis. She worked at St. Mary's Hospital until her retirement. Betty kept busy with her hobbies, knitting and making doll clothes, reading, being with Red Hat Ladies and the Lower Ladies. She took pride in her German heritage and was a member of the Carl Schurz Park of Hartland, Wis.

Betty Jane is survived by her children, Karin (Alan) Zins, Bonnie Burkard, Paul Burkard and David Burkard; grandchildren, Derek Zins and Monika Zins; brothers, Herman Carl (Julie) Mueller and Robert (Martha) Mueller; all of her favorite nieces and nephews, Karl, Johnny, Erik, Erin (Rob), Nevaeh, Phoenix, Melanie, Kyle (Julie), Ellie, Jack, Ava, Laura, Erika, Theriesa, Kirsten, CJ, Analiese, Javi, Isaiah, Nikko (Hailey), Bastian, Eamon, Rebecca and Valentine; and her buddy, Richard "Bear." She is preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Helmut Mueller; sister, Dorthea ("Mousie" Mueller) Motto; and nephew, Jarred.

A celebration of life is tentatively scheduled for June 2023 at Carl Schurz Park.
