Obituary
MADISON - Maurie W. Peterson, age 84, of McFarland, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Nov. 26, 2022. He was born on Dec. 3, 1937, in Mount Horeb, to Maurice and Celestia Peterson and grew up on a farm near McFarland. Maurie and Ianne Onsager were high school sweethearts. They married on Dec. 7, 1957, in Madison.
Maurie graduated from Madison East High School and worked for Madison Gas and Electric for 43 years until his retirement. He started as a lineman and worked his way up to managing high voltage substations. He was proud to help keep the lights on through many ice storms, thunderstorms, and the changing seasons.
Maurie was also a life-long farmer. In the early 1960s, Maurie and Ianne purchased a farm and raised corn for decades. Their son, Eric, was born in 1968 and raised on the farm. Maurie was very proud of the farm and made sure the latest corn crop was harvested this fall and the seed corn ordered for the spring.
Maurie loved to travel, he and Ianne crisscrossed the country many times in cars, RVs and on planes. He visited every state at least once, including a family road trip to Alaska in the early 1970s, and made repeat visits to many of his favorite places. Maurie’s love of travel also took he and Ianne to Europe, Broadway shows in New York City, and on a cruise through the Panama Canal for their 50th wedding anniversary. He especially liked warm destinations, including spending many winters in Hawaii, and above all traveling with his beloved Ianne.
Other than the farm in McFarland, Maurie’s favorite place was spending the winters with Ianne at their home on Fort Myers Beach, Fla. After years of working outdoors in the winter, he thoroughly enjoyed retirement by swimming in their pool, boating, and walking on the beach.
Maurie is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ianne; and son, Eric.
A funeral service will be held at ROSELAWN MEMORIAL PARK CHAPEL, 401 Femrite Dr., Madison, at 11 a.m., on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2022. Visitation will be held at the chapel from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
