Eugene R. Ring

STOUGHTON - Eugene “Gene” Robert Ring, age 83, of Stoughton, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2022, at Skaalen Retirement Services in Stoughton, Wis. He was born on Oct. 28, 1939, in Madison, the son of Conrad and Gladys (Wendt) Ring.

Growing up on a farm, Gene learned hard work and long days. He enjoyed country school and playing baseball against the surrounding country schools. When he came into town to attend high school, he continued playing baseball but added wrestling and football to the mix. He joined the ROTC and after graduating from Stoughton High School in 1958, he went to Missouri to Fort Leonard Wood and then to California to Fort Ord to continue his U.S. Army training.

On Syttende Mai in 1963, he married his best friend’s sister, Gail Olsen. Their daughter, Angella, was born in 1964 followed by their son, Conrad, in 1968. Gene was a carpenter by trade and built their first home in the country by Utica. Shortly after, they moved to nearby Stoughton and took over Gail’s childhood home on Forton Street. Living on the Yahara River gave Gene the opportunity to build purple martin houses, a pontoon boat and even an air boat. Opening Ring’s Power Center (formerly Gunnnelson’s Implement) allowed him to house his locksmithing and tool sharpening businesses. However, he missed building houses and returned to his trade.

Gene enjoyed being part of his church, Madison Gospel Tabernacle, and participating in the Christmas and Easter productions. Later on, he joined Grace Church in New Glarus. He was quick with a prayer of agreement and a, “Thank you, Lord.” Gene and Gail had many scriptures they stood in Faith on, but their favorite was Psalm 118:24 - “This is the day that the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.”

Gene is survived by his wife, Gail; children, Angella (Jeff) Burnard, and Conrad (Julie Cnare-Ring) Ring; four grandchildren, Brock (Jill) Burnard, Lucas (Abigail) Burnard, Tessa (Andrew) Coon and Mason Ring; seven great-grandchildren, Raelyn, Logyn, Madisyn and Noah Coon, Briar Burnard, and Arabella and Gianna Burnard; and brothers, Ervin Ring and Reuben (Diane) Ring; sister, Mary Ring; and many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; mother and father-in-law; brother-in-law; sisters-in-law; and nephew.

Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON STOUGHTON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 1358 Highway 51 N. @ Jackson St., Stoughton, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2022, until the time of the service at 12 noon. Cremation has taken place.
