Obituary

OREGON- Michael M. “Mike” Barry, age 88, of Oregon, passed away at home on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022. He was born on June 16, 1934, in Stoughton, Wis., the son of Phillip and Veronica (Martin) Barry. Mike graduated from Edgewood High School and went on to attend UW-Madison College of Agriculture. Mike married Darlene Raemisch on Jan. 22, 1957, at Holy Mother of Consolation Catholic Church in Oregon. They celebrated 65 years of marriage in January of 2022.


Mike owned and operated Barry Stables, one of the oldest, if not the oldest, American Saddlebred horse farms in Wisconsin, a family-owned business started in 1907.  Mike was a fourth-generation horseman, following in the hoofprints of his great-grandfather, Garrett Barry; grandfather, George Barry; and father, Phil Barry.  Mike bred, trained, and showed American Saddlebred Horses throughout his life. He received the American Saddlebred Association of Wisconsin Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.


He was a member of the United Professional Horsemen's Association, Oregon Historical Society, and the Holy Mother of Consolation Catholic Church. Mike also was a member of the Elks Club 410 for 47 years and served on the Fitchburg Police and Fire Commission for many years.


Mike is survived by his wife, Darlene; two daughters, Susan (John) Vogel and Sara (Victor) Hammer; two sons, Patrick (Kristine) Barry and Mark (Sue) Barry; six grandsons, Kevin Barry, James (Elizabeth) Barry, Ryan Barry, Martin Barry, Corey Vogel and Daniel Hammer; five granddaughters, Kelly Barry, Kerry Vogel, Jennifer Hammer, Mary Hammer and Rosemary Hammer; and his lifelong friend, Dave Trussell. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mike was a remarkable horseman, story teller and friend. I'm lucky I got to know Mike and Pat while working at Madison Equine Clinic. It was obvious how much he loved his family and his horse family also. We got to enjoy a couple St. Patrick day lunches and I felt honored he included me in this exclusive group of Irish horsemen and women. I grew up in Oregon and Barry Stables was always a staple in the community. When older, we had the opportunity to be part of the Barry “hood” in recent years. I enjoyed talking with Mike in our adjoining back yards. He loved to talk about my dad and their past encounters in Oregon-always with a smile. Mike was a huge contributor to the community and will be missed.

I heard that Clydesdales retired at Barry Stables (this was a few years ago) and I had to go see them, they sure were regal. What a great retirement community for those special horses. Such a special part of the community. Wishing the family peace and comfort during this difficult time.

I first remember the Barry family growing up as my Dad knew Mike's Dad, Phil. Years later I was reintroduced through the Trussell family. Mike and Pat trained a couple of my horses which deepened my love of saddlebreds. I have many fond memories of riding at the stables, going to shows, and developing a friendship with Mike. He was a true Irishman and one of a kind. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Mike was a special person in the horse industry, and especially in Wisconsin. My husband, Doc Sweeney, did work for Mike for many years. Those two Irish men shared many stories. I loved sharing St Patrick’s Day meals with them. Great sympathy to Darlene and his family. Jackie Sweeney
