MADISON, Wis. - Emma Naoma Schlagenhauf, age 93, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023, at her home in Madison; she was surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Aug. 5, 1929, in Arkansas, the daughter of Arthur and Ida (Rovina) Rutledge.

Emma was a hard worker her entire life. She was raised picking cotton from a young age and when she left Arkansas, she went to school to become a beautician. She owned a beauty salon for years and was beloved by the women who came to see her. She also enjoyed sewing and she even helped build several of her homes! She could do it all!

More than anything she enjoyed her family; and once you met her, you were family. She stayed connected to relatives all over the world through letter writing and phone calls. She had a relative everywhere she went!

Emma is survived by daughters, Deenah Marie (John) Givens and Fay (Dan) Schwartz; sons, Charles Douglas Edgar and Mark (Linda) Schlagenhauf; daughter-in-law, Lisa Schlagenhauf; eight granddaughters, Nikki (James) Dunn, Jenna (Travis Blair) Givens, Jenny Schwartz, Angie (Mark) Frey, Amy Schwartz, Denise (Mike) Henry, Shelly (Bryan) Gerber and Kylee Schlagenhauf; five grandsons, Ben (Ashley) Givens, Matthew (Anita) Schwartz, Craig (Brenda) Edgar, Adam (Ashby) Schlagenhauf and Matt (Brynn) Schlagenhauf; sister-in-law, Chubb Armstrong; 31 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband, Bruce Schlagenhauf; son, Alan Schlagenhauf; and grandsons, Phillip Schlagenhauf and Josh Schlagenhauf.
