Obituary

FITCHBURG - Jonathan Durley “Squeak” Jackson, Jr., age 81, of Fitchburg, died peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022, after a short battle with lung cancer. He was born Feb. 3, 1941, to Jonathan D. Jackson Sr. and Margaret Tormey Jackson.  Jon married his high school sweetheart, Joanne M. Coyne, on Jan. 23, 1965.  Jon and Joanne met sophomore year at Edgewood High School, and she stuck with him through UW-Madison Law School, eventually working together at Jackson Law Offices for 45 years.

Jon was happiest with family and friends. UW Hockey became their lives for nearly 20 years, with them traveling with the team to many National Championships to him assisting the athletes when, shockingly, legal advice was needed.  Jon owned Shagnasty’s Liquor Store for nearly 20 years with his longtime business partner and best friend, Paul, and his wife, Bonnie Palzkill.  Squeak always said, “If you ever meet a friend and are lucky to have a business partner like Paul, you have won!” There are far too many stories to go into his life, but he always did it his way and always stuck up for those who needed help the most. From winning Supreme Court cases, to fighting the system when he felt there was an injustice, he went to war.  Those who were lucky enough to have him on their side, knew the warrior he was in the courtroom.

Jon had a wonderful life with Joanne raising two children, William “Bill” Jackson and Elizabeth Jackson.  After Joanne passed from Lewy Body dementia in 2018, his life revolved around his grandchildren and Sunday family dinners made by his favorite daughter-in-law.

Squeak is survived by his son, William (Jennifer) Jackson; daughter, Elizabeth Jackson and her special friend, Dave Wierzba; grandchildren, Matthew and Adam Jindra and Greyson and Delaney Jackson; sister, Elizabeth (Wiz) Jackson; brother, Thomas (Shelly) Jackson of Franklin, Wis.; and many other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Joanne; parents; and stepmother, Virginia Jackson.

Jon would love for you to send him off with a smile, do right by the world, have fun and above all love and be loyal to those you hold closest. Jon's grandchildren will remember the love and support that their “PaPa” gave them, but know he is happy to be with “NaNa” and their four-legged friends again.

A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON FITCHBURG FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 2950 Chapel Valley Road, Fitchburg, at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, 2022. Father David Greenfield will be officiating. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until the time of the service on Friday.

Memorials may be made in Squeak’s honor to Agrace HospiceCare or Lewy Body Dementia Association.

The family would like to thank Dinny Binger, Joe Koberstein, Anita Germann and Tom and Marlene Bosben for their caregiving and support, and the staff at Agrace HospiceCare. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
