MIDDLETON - Robert Anthony Haworth, age 75, passed away in Madison, Wis., on Monday, Oct. 24, 2022, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on June 14, 1947, to Horace and Kathleen Haworth in Retford, England. After graduating from high school in 1965, he went on to study Physics and earn a Ph.D. in Biophysics at the University of Manchester. Having come to faith in Christ during his college years, he joined the Physics Department Christian Group where he met his future wife, Alison. They were married on July 19, 1969. In 1973, Rob accepted a postdoc position at the Enzyme Institute in Madison, kicking off a 35-year career in heart research at the University of Wisconsin.


Rob was a lifelong learner and in his retirement studied Philosophy and spent many happy hours developing a software program for use in research labs. He enjoyed spending time with his family and faithfully supported his grandchildren’s sports teams. During almost 50 years in Madison, he served his church in many capacities and made lasting friendships there, as well as on the golf course and soccer field. In all these spheres, he was loved and respected for his kind, gentle spirit and quiet integrity.


Rob was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Richard; and sister, Susan. He is survived by his wife, Alison; his brothers, Stephen (Susan) and John (Lucy); his daughter, Rachel (Matt) Metzger; his sons, David (Nikki) and Robin (Megan); and his eight grandchildren, Hannah, Leah, Avery, Adelyn, Amelia, Rowan, Alistair, and James.


A memorial service will take place at BLACKHAWK CHURCH, 9620 Brader Way, Middleton, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2022, followed by a British tea time reception. Visitation will be held at the church from 2 p.m. until the start of the service on Sunday.

It's hard to remember when Rob and I first met, but it would have been at the "Lunch Bunch" soccer game that took place at noon (cum tempore) three days a week, but it was certainly as far back as 1990. There was (and is) something about this particular group that makes it addictive and thus difficult to leave (and has caused it to survive). Rob was always a gentleman, on the quiet side compared to most of us, uncritical, and kind. Also an excellent soccer player, specializing in defense. Several from this group also played together on an intramural team for a number of years; Rob was a mainstay because of his outstanding defensive work. We will all miss him. Max Lagally

I had the privilege of Rob being the person who led my Stephen Ministry group where I was helped in growing to be an effective Stephen Minister. Rob's quiet and certain confidence that God would work through our prayers modeled faith for me in a way that changed me. As you grieve his leaving may you find comfort in knowing he has surely heard our Lord say "Well done, good and faithful servant."

We have fond memories of Rob from the "old" Blackhawk Church. The obituary got it right when it said that he had a gentle spirit and quiet integrity. That was certainly the case. Our most sincere condolences go to Alison and other members of the family.
