Obituary
MADISON - Philip D. “Phil” Overton passed away on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022, after a long battle with congestive heart failure and recent diagnosis of a rare cancer. He was cared for at home by his devoted wife, Carol, children and grandchildren.
Phil was the oldest child born to James and Phyllis Overton. He graduated in 1955 from Central High School. Through his high school years, he worked for the Hoffman house, an exclusive restaurant overlooking the lake. In 1967 he joined the carpenters union and was a member ever since. He was honored for 50 years in 2017. He retired from Hallmark Drywall as carpenter foreman in 2000.
Phil was the first person to have angioplasty at St. Mary’s Hospital in early 1980. Since then, he has endured multiple heart surgeries and procedures. His amazing faith in our Divine Savior has guided him to face each medical challenge with the promise of hope for the future.
Phil was blessed with many wonderful and caring doctors and nurses to numerous to mention which the family would like to thank with deep gratitude. We would like to especially thank the cardiovascular Department of SSM Health. Special thanks to Dr. Daniel Danahy, Dr. Alan Singer, Krista Raymond, Dr. Laurie Tierney, nurses, Rebecca and Sonja, from the SSM Health heart failure clinic and Dr. Timothy Kruser and entire staff at Turville Bay radiation clinic.
Philip loved to do woodworking and created beautiful wood pieces. He enjoyed auto racing, was an avid Badgers hockey fan and season ticket holder for many years. Philip always loved sports, but the real love of sports started when he was able to watch his grandsons play!
Phil is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carol; his children, Jeff Overton, Kelly (David) Dunse and Karolyn (Mike) Blair; grandchildren, Michael (Kendra) Dunse, Mitchell (Theresa) Dunse, Trevor(Meghan) Jenkins, Caleb (Bailey) Overton, Jaxson Blair, Mason Overton, Justyn Blair and Drew Blair; great-grandchildren, Landon Philip Dunse, Waylon James, Kaylyn Michelle and Brooklyn Grace Jenkins; two sisters, Dr. Sandy Holmen (Esther Fretz) and Kathy (Gary) Boebel; brothers-in-law, Rich Engelhart, Jim (Nancy) Engelhart, Bill Engelhart, Chuck (Shirley) Engelhart, Jerome Lemanski, and Clair and Charles Dirienzo; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Henshue and Mona Engelhart; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Phyllis and James; his mother and father-in-law, Herbert and Lorena Engelhart whom he dearly loved; his sister, Barbara Lee Overton; brothers-in-law, Jerry Engelhart and LaVerne Henshue; and sisters-in-law, Patricia Lemanski, Arlene Engelhart, Mary Dirienzo and Shirley Dirienzo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Philip’s honor at GOOD SHEPHERD CATHOLIC PARISH AT ST. JAMES CHURCH, 1128 St. James Ct., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022.
