Obituary

STOUGHTON - Ruth A. Sloan, age 78, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2022. She was born on Nov. 30, 1943, in Portage, the daughter of Norman and Alice Jennings.

Ruth graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 1966. She married Samuel Sloan on July 1, 1967. Ruth loved her career as a kindergarten teacher for 36 years, beginning in El Monte, Calif., and continuing in Madison at Schenk Elementary for 32 years. She was a very devoted teacher and loved her students.

Ruth was also a passionate gardener for many years. She had numerous flower gardens and enjoyed discovering new plants to add to her garden.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Sam; son, Michael (Kimberly) Sloan; two granddaughters, Mackenzie and Addison; and two brothers, Melvin (Janet) Jennings and Ralph (Rose) Jennings. She was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Alice Jennings.

A visitation will be held at GUNDERSON STOUGHTON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 1358 Highway 51 N. at Jackson St., Stoughton, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, 2022. A private burial at Riverside Cemetery in Stoughton will be held at a later date.

Memorials may be gifted in Ruth’s name to the American Family Children's Hospital.

A special thank you to the exceptional doctors and nurses in the Oncology Department of the UW Hospital, and the excellent care provided by Missy, Crystal, Jenn, and the rest of the staff of Agrace HospiceCare of Madison.

Even though I didn't know Ruth real well, I will miss seeing her come with all her numerous plants that she would bring back and forth. She was a very bright spot in Hidden River. She will be missed a lot.

We will miss Ruth. She was a kind and nice person to my family and friends. I was lucky enough to see her about 2 weeks ago and we spoke about our daughter Elise who recently went off to college in Pittsburgh, PA. She gushed about how well she will do, how happy she is for her, basically spent the entire time talking about her. It was "so Ruth". I will cherish that last memory the most. Paulette Carter

I am so sad to hear that Mrs. Sloan has passed away. She was my kindergarten teacher, and before that, the kindergarten teacher for my mother. My grandma always liked to talk with Mrs. Sloan, and would send us with Christmas cookies for her long after we'd moved beyond kindergarten class.

Mrs Sloan was my kindergarten teacher at Schenk school. She is the one teacher someone would never forget. I remember her dressing up as a witch and making us homemade root beer in a black cauldron, at Easter she would put bunny tracks in the room with mud. I am 50 years old and remember her like it was yesterday. She was an incredible person and teacher. Our condolences, Rest In Peace Mrs. Sloan. Tracie N

Ruth was my Sons kindergarten teacher. She identified my Sons learning challenges early and got him the much needed help he needed. I ran into her many times in Stoughton and continued to thank her for being the best teacher for my son. Rest In Peace Ruth. God bless you and your family.
