Obituary
FITCHBURG - Caryl L. Selchert, age 75, passed away at Agrace HospiceCare on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2022.
Caryl, “Auntie,” to friends and family, was born the eldest of two daughters on Dec. 6, 1946, to Russ and Mae Jensen. They lived in a small 8’ x 27’ trailer before moving to a house on Madison’s East Side when Caryl was 4. She graduated from Madison East High School in 1965 and attended UW-Eau Claire. After graduating in 1969, she taught briefly at Memorial High School before embarking on her career as an accountant for the State of Wisconsin. She retired from the State after 41 years of service in 2011.
Caryl was married to Dennis LaBrosse from 1974 to 1980. In 1989, she met the love of her life, Michael Selchert, at the Bridge Club in Madison. They married on Nov. 23, 1990, in Las Vegas. They both became Life Masters in Bridge and traveled to many National and Regional tournaments around the country. Their partnership in Bridge strengthened their partnership in life. They also enjoyed dining out and casino trips.
In addition to playing Bridge, Caryl had many other hobbies over the years. She was an excellent quilter, often making personalized wedding gifts. She was an avid reader and enjoyed scrapbooking. Earlier in life she shot pool on a local league and also enjoyed weekly Bingo. If you knew Caryl, you knew her feisty spirit and the fact that she was never afraid to speak her mind. She was also charitable, and consistently contributed to worthy causes and organizations.
Caryl is survived by her sister, Connie Dreger; nephew, Derek Van Woelderen (Brent Amerman); niece, Chandra Kleinsmith; and great-nephew, Cody Kleinsmith. She is also survived by many wonderful Bridge friends and good neighbors, Scott Lewandowski and Debbie Elmer, who provided much needed support to both Caryl and Mike over the years.
Caryl was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Selchert (Dec. 2, 2021); parents, Russ and Mae Jensen; brother-in-law, Tom Dreger; and in-laws, Glen Selchert and Janet Kingsley.
A private family burial will take place at Roselawn Memorial Park on Monday, Oct. 10, 2022. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Madison Public Library Foundation in her name. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
