Obituary

OREGON - On Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2022, Samuel Clarence “Butch” Ace III, passed away after battling cancer at the age of 73.  Butch was raised on the family farm and graduated from Belleville High School in 1967 where he excelled in football, basketball and track.  After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Ramstein Air Force Base until he was honorably discharged in 1971.  Upon his return, he married Louise Packard and they had one son, Michael.  Butch was employed at Oscar Mayer for 31 years. In 1977, he met Rose Ann “Rosie” Myrland Leikness Ace and they later married in 1984 joining their families together forever.  In 1996, Butch and Rosie bought the Main Tap where Butch continued to run Rosie’s Main Tap after her death with the support of Renee Hardy and sold it in 2012.

Butch gave us all his gift of time.  As children he would take us everywhere with him: to softball games, Wednesday swim nights at the Stoughton pool, and his dad’s farm.  Wherever he was going he would always ask if we wanted to come.  He took time to attend our sporting and school events.  He would attend band competitions with Renee and Kristina all over the Midwest.  He shared his gift of golf and bowling with his friends and continued to bowl in leagues with Doug.  He extended his gift to his grandchildren by attending their sporting events and scheduling times to go to the movies on Sundays or to watch a Badgers and Packers Game.  Christmas was always a cherished time that he spent with us kids and grandkids playing cards where he was often quoted, “this game is so stupid!”

Butch is survived by his partner of 23 years, Renee Hardy; children, Doug (Patty) Leikness, Lisa Olson and Dana Leikness; James Berman and Kristina Bailey; grandchildren, Charnette (Cole) Tobin, Jake Olson, Emma Olson, Jace Olson, Josh Olson, Ryan Leikness and Rachel Leikness; Sabrina and Hannah Berman; great-grandchildren, Brody Tobin and Aurora Hernandez-Berman; siblings, Sandra (Lee) Cloud, Suzette Noyce, Steve (Sue) Ace and David (Kari) Ace; and stepmother, Mary-Lou Ace.  Butch was preceded in death by his son, Michael Jon Ace; wife, Rosie Ace; his parents, Samuel Ace and Carolyn Ace Bunnell; brother, Kevin Ace; and brother-in-law, Lee Cloud.

A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON OREGON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 1150 Park St., Oregon, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022. A graveside service with military honors will follow at Prairie Mound Cemetery in Oregon. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 19, 2022, and also from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday.

Butch was a genuine and kind person, son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend to all who met him.  He gave the best of himself to others and served as an example for doing the right thing.

Donations may be made in Butch’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Agrace HospiceCare. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Got to know Sam quite well when Sam and Mike Pond invited to join their golf group. During those rounds of golf we would reminisce about our working days ay Oscar Mayer and complain about our golf games. Sam was one of the good guys and would comment numerous times his fondness of his family especially Renee. R.I.P Sam !!!

To the family of 'Butch' Ace. My deepest sympathies. Butch was a super guy. He always treated me so well. But.. He would chew me out if I got a little to rowdy at the Tap. And that was ok. I had great respect for him. He treated people right. I hadn't seen him in a while but will miss his humor and good firm handshake. I hope it is of some comfort to all of you to know that he was liked by so many. Respectfully, Jim Snow.
