MADISON - Dixie Bruer, age 79, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022. She was born on Jan. 22, 1943, in Marion, Ind., the daughter of Ralph and Catherine (Dixon) Dulin.


Dixie graduated from Madison East High School in 1961. She was united in marriage to Dennis Bruer on Aug. 26, 1967, in Madison.  Dixie was employed by the UW-Madison in the Veterinary Science Department as a veterinary technician and later owned her own business, Bruer Consulting Parasitology until her retirement. Growing up, she loved caring for her horses. She also enjoyed golfing, traveling and celebrating the Christmas season.


Dixie is survived by her sisters, Gloria Bronson and Donna Kay Dulin; brother, Steven Marc (Ellen Volkmann) Dulin; brother-in-law, Bob (Judy) Bruer; six nieces, Paula (Chris) Dulin-Conroy, Sheena (Nate) Amble, Nicole Bronson, Whitney Mayfield, Val Pickar and Kris Pickar; nephew, Brett (Ann) Pickar; dear friend, Priscilla Peterson; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Catherine; and husband, Dennis Bruer.


Dixie will be remembered as a wonderful sister, friend to many, and her love for her beloved dogs.

Dixie was the fountain of knowledge in Dr Arlie Todd’s laboratory, she taught generations of graduate students the fundamentals of veterinary parasitology. She was smart and funny and remembered everyone she met. Dixie and Denny never met a stranger.
