Obituary

MADISON - Joe Maassen, age 72, of Madison, died early Tuesday morning, Sept. 6, 2022. Joe never met an argument he didn’t win, so after an eight-month battle with leukemia, we’re pretty sure he took it down with him.  


Joe was adamant that we keep his obituary brief - he was, indeed, never one to seek the spotlight, but always pulling strings behind the scenes. So, the short story is that Joe did good, a lifetime of good.    


Joe will be missed dearly by his wife, Linda (Kelly) Maassen, who has spent over 50 years co-piloting their life together. Joe’s children, Nick and Megan, their spouses, Summer and Adam, and his granddaughter, Rori, are forever grateful for his unwavering support, his appetite for mischief, and his spirit of generosity. And, his two grand puppies, Murphy and Lou, will undoubtedly miss eating just enough of his Egg McMuffin to know they’re special. Joe also leaves behind many other family members and friends, who we hope will hold their memories with him close.


At Joe’s request, a private family committal will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery. The family will hold a celebration at QUIVEY’S GROVE, 6261 Nesbitt Road, Fitchburg, from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2022.



Remembrance gifts in Joe’s name may be made to Ridgewood Community Pool in Madison, Wisconsin, through the Ed Nebbins Foundation, and to the Washburn, Wisconsin Community Center - “The Club” - through the Historic Civic Center Foundation.

Joe was a wonderful spirited, humorous and talented friend. He loved the challenge of making it through any process/policy change to do the best possible for the citizens of Wisconsin! We worked on many of them over the years and even worked for the same state senator, though not at the same time. His sense of humor and laugh made working with him fun!! Joe and I were in adjoining offices for more than 20 years, but my favorite memory of him was when he visited me in the hospital while I was recovering from a stroke and he made me laugh. I will always remember him, and send my sincere condolences to his family. Mike Kernats

I couldn't believe the news that Joe had "changed places." There are so many memories, how can I choose just one. He always lent an ear when needed and vice versa. He was a true joy to work with for 20+ years, I learned a lot from him, he kept us in stitches, and was a good friend. He will continue to be a shining light from the heavens. I'll miss you, Pudgeball. I'm sending thoughts and prayers to Linda, the kids, and the rest of the family.
