Obituary

MADISON - William Jennings “Willy” Boehnen has reached eternal rest and peace on Friday, Sept. 9, 2022. He was born in Madison and lived his entire life in the Mad city.  


Willy is survived by his parents, Tom (Jean) Boehnen and Rick Neuenschwander; along with his siblings, Tommy (Dora) Boehnen, Rachel (Jeff) Blum, Paul (Amy) Schneider. He is loved and missed by many uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews. Willy was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Neuenschwander; and maternal and paternal grandparents.


Willy was educated in Madison public schools, graduating from LaFollette High School in 1994. After graduation from high school, he attended UW Oshkosh. He received an associate degree in culinary arts from Napa Valley Cooking School.


Willy had a passion for soccer and was quite successful, playing on some elite Madison teams. He was awarded with All-City honors in his senior year and traveled with his 76ers team to a regional tournament in Springfield, Mo., after winning the Wisconsin championship. Willy also loved hockey and youth baseball.


After Napa Valley, Willy returned to Madison and worked at numerous restaurants. This also was the start of his addiction. He could never get the switch in his brain to shutoff.  He tried several treatment and rehab programs, but the pull of drugs and alcohol always won. The love and support of family was not enough for Willy to overcome his addiction.


There will be a private family gathering to honor Willy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family for a memorial to be determined. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Willy and I have not been close for many years, but I will always consider him to be one of my oldest and dearest friends. My earliest memories were based on our shared love for skateboarding, he was the real deal on a skateboard. As we grew older, we both moved to more traditional sports and I remember how easily he picked up the sport of hockey, it is not an easy sport to start playing in High school, but he sure did. I will always cherish Will's friendship and I am so grateful for having him in my life. Matt Rodefeld

So sorry for your loss. I only knew Willy through his brother, my very good friend Tom (Junior), and his Dad, Tom, but I know he was very loved. Prayers for your families.
