COTTAGE GROVE - John E. Zweig, age 75, passed away on Friday, Sept. 23, 2022, at home surrounded by his family. He was born on Aug. 2, 1947, in East St. Louis, Ill., the son of John C. and Virginia (Huff) Zweig.


John grew up in Belleville, Ill. where he graduated from Belleville Township High School. He later received his Doctor of Dental Medicine from Washington University. John enlisted in the U.S. Army during school and worked as a dentist in the Army following graduation. While stationed in Germany, he met his wife, Margaret Irons, a captain in the U.S. Army. They married on Oct. 19, 1974, in Heidelberg Castle. John retired from the Army as a colonel after 28 years of service and began working for Dental Associates of Wisconsin in Green Bay in 1998. He retired as Chief Dental Officer in 2021.


John enjoyed golfing, tending to his yard, coaching and leading youth activities with his children, loved his basset hounds, and found joy in being a grandfather. He also enjoyed volunteering with human and civil rights organizations. John and Margaret were active members of First English Lutheran Church in Appleton prior to moving to Cottage Grove, and most recently McFarland Lutheran Church.  


John is survived by his wife of 48 years, Margaret; sons, James (Kristy) Zweig and Robert Zweig and his daughter, Christina L. Zweig; grandchildren, Emmalynn and Esmé Zweig; and brother, Greg (Becky) Zweig. He was preceded in death by his parents.


A private family service will be held at a later date.

Jack (John) was the good son, my protector and mentor, a dentist, our best man, husband and father, an uncle, a Colonel in the U.S. Army, and an especially loving grandfather. It is so unbelievable that he is gone. However, he will live on as long as we continue to breath his name and the memories he gave us. He was and forever will be a good brother. I met John when I joined the Stewardship Comm at McFarland Lutheran Church. He and his wife were new to McFarland Lutheran and what a blessing they were. John was amazingly diplomatic and intelligent and would share ideas that gad worked in their former parishes. How foetunate our community was ro know them. When John so bravely spoke at the annual meeting, I was sad to see him not feeling well, yet attending snd contributing. A selfless, remarkable and upbeat man and a truly kind and lovely couple. John was a close dental school friend and classmate of mine. He was a bright, diligent and ethical dentist, always caring for his patients and colleagues. I know he will be missed, but will live on through the many he loved and served.
