MCFARLAND - Joseph D. “Joe” Laufenberg, age 74, of McFarland, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2022, at VA Hospital in Madison, following a hard-fought battle with cancer. Joe was born on Feb. 6, 1948, in Madison, a son of Joseph A. Laufenberg and Barbara E. Laufenberg. He was married to the love of his life, Barbara Quamme-Laufenberg on May 5, 1990, in Madison. They were married for 32 years and adored each other.
Joe proudly served in the U. S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam war. He spent his career as a mechanic at Chief Auto Parts in Madison and Schmitz Salvage in Waunakee. He was handy and always willing to help others. Many have fond memories of him changing an engine or tire.
In his free time, Joe loved building and flying RC airplanes with his brothers, Kenny and Gary. He also enjoyed watching the Packers and drinking Pabst while spending time with family and friends. Joe always looked forward to their annual family trips to Hayward and Deadwood, S.D.
Joe is survived by his wife, Barb Quamme-Laufenberg; stepchildren, Brian (Tracy) Quamme of McFarland and Melissa (Mike) Lund of Stoughton; and three beautiful grandchildren that he adored dearly, Taylor, Sawyer and Granger Quamme. He is also survived by his siblings, Diane Kelly, Patsy (John) Kearney, Gary (Sandy) Laufenberg, Kathy (Robert) Kuczynski and Debbie (Bryan) Dibble; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph A. Laufenberg; mother, Barbara E. Laufenberg-Osmond; and siblings, Jim Laufenberg, Kenny Laufenberg, Shelby Hoon, Dan Laufenberg, Dale Laufenberg, Johnny Laufenberg and Shelly Koeberli.
Joe was a man of few words, but he always made those around him feel welcome and loved. He was a quiet teacher and a gentle man. He was fierce in his devotion to those he loved, and never wanted anyone to fuss over him.
In true Joe style, a casual Celebration of Life with food and drinks will be held with family and friends at PARK SIDE PUB, 5016 Erling Ave., McFarland, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022. He will be recognized with full Military Honors.
