MADISON - Pastor Richard H. “Dick” Peik, age 81, of Madison, Wis., went to his heavenly home on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2022. He was born on March 9, 1941, in Hutchinson, Minn., the son of Howard and Lucille Peik, and passed away at his home in Madison.


Dick graduated from Brownton High School and attended Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn., earning his B.A., finding his calling as a pastor, and meeting his future wife.  He married Carol Townsend on June 13, 1964, and enjoyed a loving, devoted relationship for 58 years until his death.


Pastor Peik began his ministry at age 23 and attended Asbury Seminary, Wilmore, Ky., earning a Master of Divinity. He pastored multiple churches in Illinois and Wisconsin.


Dick was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1983 and bore the challenges of this disease with courage and resilience until his death. His wife, Carol, provided him loving care throughout.


Dick was an avid sports fan, and excelled in baseball, football and basketball.  He encouraged his children to stay active throughout their childhood.  Dick loved music, especially bluegrass and played guitar, trombone and mandolin.   


Richard is survived by his wife, Carol; three children, Elizabeth (John) Brekelbaum of Rockford, Ill., Jonathan (Cathy) Peik of Wauwatosa, Wis., and David Peik of Geneva, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Jake, Jesse and Jonah Brekelbaum; Blake, Genevieve and Andrien Peik; and Eli Peik; two brothers, Chuck (Barb) Peik and Randy Peik; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.


A funeral service will be held at DOOR CREEK CHURCH, 6602 Dominion Drive, Madison, at 12 noon on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2022. A visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until 11:45 a.m.


An additional visitation will be held at NORTH GROVE EVANGELICAL CHURCH, 10384 W. Coffman Road, Forreston, Ill., on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2022, from 10 a.m. until the time of remembrance beginning at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at the North Grove Evangelical Church Cemetery.

How the angels must be rejoicing to welcome this faithful servant of Christ to his eternal home. I've so admired Dick's courage and Carol's devotion to him over the many years I've known them. May God's comfort and peace surround Dick's loved ones during this time of sadness.

Ohmygosh, I wouId be there in a heartbeat if I could. I am still teaching part time and have a teacher meetings all week this week. Carol, Elizabeth, Jon, and David, he was such a great man. I remember him teaching a lesson to the kids one day that struck me right to my heart and I have thought back on it so many times over the years. I can still see in my minds eye the image he drew on the paper that was on the easel. The lesson was about God looking at us and not seeing our sin but seeing Jesus. I still remember your house in Madison. And it sounds like Carol is still there from the address that I saw posted. You are an amazing family and I pray that you rest in the comfort that his suffering is over and he is with Jesus. Can’t wait to see you all again on the other side.🥳 I am so sorry for your great loss but I’m happy that his suffering is over. He was so strong, even when I was still in touch with you.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Carol, Jon and all of the family. It was my pleasure to know Dick when our sons played music together with the Nob Hill Boys. I treasure the memory of sitting in the audience with Carol and Dick on many occasions. I join all of you and many others in giving thanks for a life well lived and a legacy of enduring value.

I was in his high school class. He was valedictorian, He was in every sport, He led our church youth group, and invited us to his home to play games & jam on our musical instruments. He made everything fun. I remember him as a point guard dribbling the basketball down the gym as he was thinking about who to pass it to. He must have made a lot of correct decisions because we got to the state tournaments. Must have been hard to be so athletic and not be able move like that any more. “He often sat behind me in class and loved to startle me buy pulling my hair or giving me a poke.” That’s how I remember him. Blessings to Carol for taking such good care of him.
