MADISON - Robert E. Montgomery, age 69, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 24, 2022, at home. He was born on June 8, 1953, to Baines and Mary (Vaughn) Montgomery and lived his entire life in Madison. He attended East High School and UW-Madison, graduating with a B.A. in Communication/Creative Writing. Robert married Carrie Hoch on Sept. 10, 1983, at St. Raphael’s Cathedral.


Robert spent his first 25 years of employment at AT&T while attending UW-Madison. When the Madison AT&T office closed, he worked with Sauk County in the IT Division for 19 years. He made lifelong friends at both places. Robert retired from Sauk County in January 2019. He spent his retirement visiting friends outside of Wisconsin and playing bridge and poker with many different groups. He enjoyed riding his bicycle to downtown Madison, visiting The Memorial Union and having lunch at Nick's.


Robert is survived by his wife of 38 years, Carrie Montgomery; two pet dogs, Percy and Quincy; brothers, David (Lynn) Montgomery and John (Mary) Montgomery; sister, Fran (Scott) Peterson; sister-in-law, Marilyn (Ron) Kotenberg; and nieces and nephews, Kurt (Erin) Kotenberg, Kristi (Matt) Schaefers, Geoffrey Montgomery, James (Kristi) Montgomery, Matt (Crystal) Petersen, Chris Petersen, Michael Montgomery, and Liz Montgomery. He was preceded in death by his parents.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2022, with Father Randy Timmerman officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the start of the Mass on Tuesday. The family encourages guests to wear masks. Interment will be private.


Memorials may be made to the Dane County Humane Society in Robert's name.


A special thanks to the Madison EMTs, police department and fire department for their efforts and care of Robert.

Robert was my brother’s best friend since elementary school. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t know Robert. When my brother, Alan (Alien) Christensen died 4 years ago, Robert’s big, generous, heart was broken. Since that time Robert and Carrie had become friends with my husband and me. We live in Texas and I found Robert’s habit of keeping in touch by sending hand written letters, very charming. In this age of email, I had forgotten the pleasure of opening and reading a letter. Less than 2 weeks ago, we were in Madison for a gaming weekend in memory of Alan. We met Robert and Carrie for dinner one night. We had a pleasant evening reminiscing about Alien and looking forward to future plans that we all had for our retirements. Robert was full of plans for enjoying life with Carrie.
