Obituary

MADISON - Christopher A. Barry, age 66, of Madison, unexpectedly passed away on Wednesday, July 13, 2022. His sweet and caring soul is an unimaginable loss for his wife, daughter and family. Chris was born on March 13, 1956, in Chicago, Ill., to Walter and Elizabeth (nee Bradford) Barry. He graduated from Brookfield East High School in Brookfield, Wis. Chris studied journalism and art at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Here he met the love of his life and wife of 40 years, Susan (Donegan) Barry. They were united in marriage in 1982. In 1993 they welcomed their daughter, Vani.

Chris worked at Messners, Thrift Painting, Jim’s Sign Shop and opened his own business: Impact Window Painting, where he created and painted window splashes, signs of all kinds for businesses, car dealerships and restaurants. His favorite job was working with his friend, Bernie Poff, at Bernie’s Polliwog Studio. Together they created murals, signs and sculptures. Chris was a "wall dog" muralist and murals were his passion. Chris was an amazing father and grandfather. He loved his little family and would do anything for them. He will always be remembered for his big heart, enthusiasm for life, his sense of humor, and his kid-like spirit. His passions included: art, nature, gardening, bowling, listening to music, reading and rooting for the Cubs through thick and thin. Recently, he enjoyed going to concerts with his wife and playing with his grandkids.

Chris is survived by his wife, Susan Barry of Madison; daughter, Vani (Trevor) Tschantz; three grandchildren, Sawyer, Parker and Amari; his mother, Elizabeth Barry; brothers, David and Peter Barry; sisters, Kate Blackmore and Laura Rod; nieces and nephews and many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Barry; and brother, Bradford Barry.

As a gift to the family, family and friends are invited to bring written memories of Chris to share and for the family to collect.

A celebration of life will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday, July 22, 2022. Beginning at 5:30 p.m. friends will have the opportunity to read and share their stories of Chris.

A loss felt deeply by family and friends. Chris is the older brother. He was funny and always had a story to tell and music to share. Art was his life work and past time and he was quick to show the latest creation in progress. He was a fellow gardener and an avid reader and could start a mean bonfire. He reached out and embraced life. The spaces he takes up in peoples hearts will not be empty just tender to the touch for awhile.

Sue, my heart is heavy for you, Vani, and your entire family. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words, and based on pictures I’ve seen of you and Chris, you always looked so connected and in love. My deepest sympathy to you and your family. Sending hugs, Beth Stone
